Cheyney University of Pennsylvania invites applicants to submit their candidacy for a part-time, Professional Instructional Leader position, which are grant-funded positions supporting the Department of Natural & Applied Sciences. Professional Instructional leaders may work up to 20 hours per week. Reporting to the Director of Student Success & Wellness through the university’s Academic Success Center (ASC), the Professional STEM Instructional Leaders will provide individualized, and where appropriate, targeted group instruction in diverse STEM-related subject areas such as mathematics (including statistics), biology, chemistry, and computer information/cyber security technologies.

Professional Instructional Leaders will work flexible hours that will include being personally available for a minimum number of on-campus, weekly or bi-weekly, in-person, face-to-face, or evening support sessions in addition to using available technology for remote supplemental tutoring options. The Academic Success Center Staff will provide multiple levels of assistance including administrative and scheduling support, access to instructional technology through the university Academic Computer Lab and reserving appropriate space for group and/or private tutoring sessions.Our professional instructional leaders are committed to their own professional growth and will be expected to participate in multiple institutional as well as their own private, personal and skill development training which helps to build their skills as highly efficient academic support professionals.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION:

  • Provide in-person, face-to-face tutoring for undergraduate students who have scheduled appointments and/or drop-ins for academic support in specialized subject areas. Students must sign into every session, whether they had a scheduled appointment or are drop-ins.
  • Respond to scheduled appointments with students as well as coordinating consistent follow up appointments.
  • Provides problem solving strategies and study skills techniques during tutorial sessions.
  • Discuss students’ academic (and other) support needs in specific subject areas.
  • Follow institutional strategic or specific student skill development plans as designed by the University.
  • Organize, collect, and prepare summaries of student progress but protecting and honoring confidentiality.
  • Lead (facilitate), participate, and/or assist in skill building workshops upon request.
  • Complete all appropriate Tutor Certification forms and Time/Activity Sheets (include student name, date, length of session and area of assistance) for students for whom services are provided.
  • Attend in-person or via remote technology classes if necessary, and as required by the Director to better assist students for future tutoring sessions including organizing small group tutorials for students enrolled in developmental or other courses.
  • Ensure students sign in, review assignment requirements, academic coaching, assistance with specialized writing for students in diverse writing intensive courses, review completed work, provide documentation of activities, assist with computer logins, and answer general questions.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Education, Training, and/or Experience:

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Computer/Cyber Technology or CIS or STEM-related fields from a nationally accredited university.
  • Must be reliable, punctual, and dependable.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Relevant experience and/or expertise in the STEM industry and/or demonstrating an expertise as a seasoned STEM educator, researcher, and/or industry leader will also be considered.
  • Advanced Degree (master’s or Ph.D.). in highly preferred.
  • One to two years’ experience in providing tutorial services to STEM students as individuals or small groups OR one to two years teaching experience, preferably at the college (or developmental) level in courses such as: Elementary, Intermediate, and Linear Algebra, Calculus I & II, Discrete Math, Survey of College Mathematics, Precalculus/Elementary Functions, Calculus I & II, Statistics, Chemistry I & II, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology I & II, Molecular Biology, Cytology, Human Anatomy, Physics I & II, Nutrition, Computer Programming, Intro to Java/Coding, Computer Information/Cyber Security Sciences.

Knowledge & Skills, Abilities:

  • Experience in tutoring and mentoring diverse student populations-especially at-risk, first generation, and low-income students of color
  • Excellent business analytical skills and possess high level communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently yet dutifully within university as well as accepted industry pedagogy
  • A desire to assist and develop competent writers plus motivate and engage students
  • Must be computer literate and participate in the university tutor and other training programs
  • Be available for a maximum of 20 hours of on-campus, in-person, face-to-face tutoring sessions as well as offer remote options to students, if necessary.
  • Serve as a reliable resource for students interested in careers in the areas of business, marketing, economics, accounting, or hotel, restaurant, and tourism industries.
  • Sharing industry experience and combining that knowledge with course content to assist interested students in their professional preparation and development.
  • Create an environment where students feel comfortable in discussing and improving their skills.
  • Accept support/feedback from and provide support/feedback to faculty about a student’s experiences, work ethic, abilities, and potential for success.
