Description:
The School of Design at Carnegie Mellon University seeks an adjunct Faculty to teach an undergraduate course, junior studio (51-360 Environments IV). This studio builds off the students' previous experience in the design and prototyping of physical spaces and immersive experiences, with an emphasis on digital-physical interactions, installations and distributed IoT devices. The specific course projects will be crafted alongside School of Design faculty and could be catered to the expertise of the adjunct teacher. The course meets in-person on Tuesdays and Thursdays 2:00 pm - 4:50 pm, starting on January 17th and ending on May 4th. The official academic calendar can be found here. There will likely be 13 undergraduate students enrolled in the course.

Adjunct teacher's responsibilities will include:

2-3 planning meetings in December/January (date/time TBD) with School of Design faculty members to discuss the course, projects, learning objectives, etc.

Update of existing course syllabus, schedule, and project descriptions based on meetings.

Developing related course materials (e.g. prototyping demonstrations, relevant professional case studies)

Attending all classes: Tuesday/Thursday 2:00-4:50 pm (Jan 17, 2023 - May 4, 2023)

Being available for office hours outside of class time. Zoom or in-person; can be by appointment only.

Asynchronous feedback/grading after projects.
Qualifications:
The School invites applicants with the following qualifications:

A Master's degree, or Bachelor's degree plus teaching and/or professional practice experience in design, architecture, HCI, or a related field.

University-level teaching experience preferred.

Experience in storytelling, representation, and prototyping for interactions, including familiarity with interaction design tools and software.

Expertise in one or more of the following areas:

Augmented reality/mixed reality interfaces, interactions, and experiences

Intelligent environments & Internet of Things artifacts

Responsive environments and interactive installations

Immersive hybrid experiences

Critical approaches to technology, design, and the built environment
