Job Description:
Randolph College, a small liberal arts college in Lynchburg, Virginia, invites applications for its next Ainsworth Visiting Scholar of American Culture. This position is a three-year appointment at the assistant professor level beginning July 1, 2025; the report date is mid-August.
We seek a scholar and teacher with expertise in American culture and life. This scholar will co-lead Randolph College’s innovative American Culture Program and teach courses in their field. The candidate’s area of expertise is open, though we encourage applicants with strengths in interdisciplinary fields such as African-American Studies, Asian American Studies, Latino/a Studies, Native American Studies, and Gender Studies.
The American Culture Program, funded by the Hilsweck Foundation, is an interdisciplinary program that allows Randolph College students to engage in a concentrated and immersive study of a particular aspect of American culture. Students in the American Culture Program learn through readings, films, discussions, visiting speakers, and travel. The lens through which this program examines American culture changes every three years, and the Ainsworth Scholar will be responsible for collaborating with the Director of the American Culture Program to develop the next theme.
We seek a candidate with culturally responsive and innovative pedagogical approaches to teach in our TAKE2 curricular model, where classes are offered in two 7-week sessions each semester. In the fall, the candidate will teach one course in their field in each session. In the spring, the candidate will teach one course in their field in one session and team-teach two courses comprising the American Culture Program in the other.
