Position Highlights

The James C. Wyant College of Optical Sciences is seeking an extended-temporary research professional to assist in the development and prototyping of an optical system for an oral cancer detection and treatment project. The role involves designing, fabricating, and testing optical elements and systems, working closely with a postdoctoral researcher. The ideal candidate will have experience in optical engineering and system development.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Optical Element Fabrication: Under general direction fabricate custom optical elements, such as lenses, mirrors, and coatings, required for the system.
  • System Testing and Optimization: Conduct rigorous testing of the optical system for performance and reliability, including troubleshooting and refinement.
  • Collaboration with Postdoc: Work closely with a postdoctoral researcher to integrate research findings into the design and ensure project goals are met.
  • Experimentation and Data Collection: Assist with performing experiments to validate optical system performance, collect data, and analyze results.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Optical Engineering: General understanding of optical system design, including ray tracing, optical element selection, and imaging systems.
  • 3D Printing Technologies: Demonstrated knowledge in 3D printing methods and materials, particularly as applied to optical component fabrication and application in optical systems.
  • Prototyping and Testing: Demonstrated expertise in designing, building, and testing prototypes of optical systems.
  • Problem-Solving Abilities: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills in a research and development environment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Optical Engineering or closely related field.
  • 1 year of relevant work experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • An MS degree in Optical Engineering or related field is highly desirable.
  • Experience in optical engineering and system development.
