Department Head - Teacher Education
The Dewar College of Education and Human Services seeks applicants for a fiscal (12 month) administrative faculty ranked position beginning July 1, 2025. The position is responsible for directing and participating in the teaching and other functions of an academic department. This position carries faculty rank of either Associate or Full Professor, with the possibility of tenure.
The department offers seventeen programs that span bachelors, masters, and specialist degree programs as well as several minors offered in both fully online and fully face-to-face modalities to approximately 1,700 students. The department is home to the vibrant Sullivan Literacy Center that serves as a training facility for students and provides state-of-the-art tutoring and evaluation to students in our region. In addition, the department collaborates with local schools through Professional Development School partnerships to provide experiential learning through the application of theory, research, and practice. Finally, the department administers the Sullivan Scholarship, the college’s flagship program designed to equip teachers for impactful careers in rural school districts. RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting directly to the Dean, the department head is responsible for the overall day-to-day functions of the department and serves as its primary spokesperson and advocate. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Establish a collaborative department vision and agenda that is aligned with the university and college mission and strategic plans;
- Foster a positive department environment that supports excellent teaching, scholarship and service;
- Facilitate curriculum reviews to maintain excellence, ensure career readiness, and align with state certification requirements;
- Hire, manage, and evaluate faculty and staff members in the department;
- Conduct regular departmental meetings;
- Serve as the Budget Manager for the department.
- Schedule classes and sections for each faculty member in each academic semester;
- Support students through mentoring, overseeing internships, and providing an outstanding curriculum;
- Teach courses throughout the fiscal year;
- Participate in research and scholarly activities;
- Attend required conferences, including discipline and accreditation related events;
- Support experiential learning activities, including research, service learning, and clinical experiences;
- Oversee comprehensive program reviews as well as annual program evaluations;
- Participate in College Executive Committee meetings, monthly Council of Department Heads meetings, and events that sustain the life of the university, like commencement and awards ceremonies.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Doctoral degree in Education or other closely related field;
- A minimum of three years teaching in US P-12 school settings;
- A record of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service;
- A record of progressively responsible and relevant leadership experience;
- Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and learning, as well as scholarship;
- Demonstrated awareness of current trends in higher education and teacher education and a commitment to innovation in teaching and learning;
- Exceptional organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills;
- A commitment to shared governance and a consultative leadership style;
- Knowledge of teacher certification requirements including state mandated assessments and field experiences.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience as a Department Head;
- Record of successful outreach to community;
- Demonstrate ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders;
- Commitment to diversity and inclusion;
- Possess knowledge and understanding of budget management;
- Experience with research, grant writing and extramural funding;
- Experience with faculty evaluation and promotion and tenure processes;
- Experience with preparing certification and accreditation reports.
