Job Description

We're seeking for an HVAC Master Technician to join our Student Engagement and Campus Life team in Blacksburg, VA, to help us in our mission. You will be crucial in maintaining our facility's comfort and efficiency. Here's what you need to know about the role:

1) You'll join the Student Engagement and Campus Life (SECL) team; a department centered on cultivating affirming environments, promoting holistic well-being, and providing exceptional services, programs, and facilities.

2) You'll report to the SECL Facilities Manager in a Regular twelve-month, 100%, Staff appointment.

3) Some of the key responsibilities are:

  • Install, Troubleshoot, and Repair: Manage hydronic heating and cooling systems, including steam, chilled water, and hot water systems.
  • System Components: Handle air handlers, energy recovery units, VAV boxes, pumps, variable frequency drives, valves, and piping.
  • Preventative Maintenance: Collaborate with the Facilities Manager to plan and implement effective preventative maintenance programs.
  • Training and Development: Provide hands-on training and support to trainee-level employees and identify educational opportunities for the department.
  • General Maintenance: Perform minor electrical, plumbing, and carpentry repairs as needed.
  • On-Call Rotation: Participate in the rotational on-call schedule, responding to after-hours maintenance calls when required.

5) You'll be offered a base compensation package between $50,000-55,000, with a comprehensive benefits package that includes health insurance, paid leave, retirement, tuition assistance, VT discounts, and so much more!

Required Qualifications

- Expertise in HVAC Systems: Knowledge of HVAC systems and components, ensuring high-quality maintenance and repairs.
  • Hydronic Heating and Cooling: Extensive experience and understanding of hydronic heating and cooling systems.
  • Blueprints and Schematics: Ability to accurately interpret and follow blueprints, schematic drawings, and specifications.
  • Effective Communication: Strong communication and interpersonal skills for effective interactions with customers, co-workers, and leadership.
  • Efficient Work Ethic: Ability to prioritize workload and work efficiently with minimal supervision.
  • Professional Experience: Journeyman-level experience.
  • Computer Skills: Working knowledge of computers and proficiency in programs such as Word and Excel.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Experience: Master-level experience or licensure in HVAC, demonstrating advanced skills and expertise.
  • Software Proficiency: Successful experience with work order systems.

- The successful candidate must have a criminal background and a driver's license check.

  • The position is considered Emergency Personnel. Emergency personnel are those employees, salaried or waged, assigned to positions identified by their departments as necessary to maintain the vital operations and services of the university. These employees are required to work during an authorized closing.
  • The work schedule for this position is Monday through Friday from 7 am to 4 pm.
