This is a full-time, in-person leadership role; the target start date is January 2025.
MMA is a fully accredited, four-year, co-educational state university offering bachelor's and master's degrees that are highly regarded in the worldwide maritime industry and beyond. One of nine campuses of the Massachusetts state university system, MMA serves and prepares 1,400 undergraduate and graduate students for careers in the marine transportation, engineering, international maritime business, emergency management, and environmental fields. Located at the mouth of the scenic Cape Cod Canal, MMA is an hour's drive from the thriving urban communities of Boston and Providence and offers easy access to the pristine beaches of Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard.
Reporting to the vice president of student services, the commandant of cadets/assistant dean of students (commandant or commandant of cadets) serves as the chief architect and champion of the cadet experience and provides critical oversight of the academy's regiment of cadets. Using a solutions-focused approach, this position will work in close partnership with the vice president for student services, department staff, cadet leaders, and stakeholders across the institution to further the academy's commitment to educate the whole student and ensure a positive and impactful experience for all cadets. Accordingly, the commandant of cadets will be charged with implementing strategies, initiatives, and best practices in such areas as orientation and transition programs, care and advocacy, housing and residential life, student conduct, student engagement, campus recreation, and behavioral intervention. The position manages a $700,000 budget, supervises eight to ten professional staff members, and is responsible for the overall operations and assessment of the regiment of cadets, including policies and procedures, leadership development, and personal development.
Public Salary Range: $118,000-$125,000
Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess a master's degree and at least five years of relevant experience. They will demonstrate strong leadership abilities, a genuine passion for working with college students, a commitment to diversity and inclusion, and an affinity for the distinctive mission and character of the academy. Preferred qualifications include experience in a regimental college or university setting or military service, as well as a proven track record in developing and implementing effective student development programs.
