Position Summary
The Department of Social Work at Austin Peay State University (APSU) invites applications for the position of Department Chairperson. The department chair will provide administrative leadership to a department that houses both a bachelor of social work (BSW) and a master of social work (MSW) degree, which are accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). The position entails nine months of full-time and three months of summer service. A separate stipend is available for both periods.
The social work department enrolls about 250 majors per year with courses in both on-ground and online formats at the Clarksville campus. There are six full-time faculty and eight adjuncts.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Responsible for working collaboratively with faculty, staff, and administration to promote enrollment growth and student success.
- Provide coordination and oversight for CSWE accreditation
- Oversight and assistance with advising throughout the department
- Experience or aptitude for leading/managing personnel, completing performance reviews, reviewing/revising curricula, spearheading strategic planning and outcomes assessment efforts, and effectively deploying faculty and resources to meet the needs of students are critical.
- Teach nine credit hours per academic year.
- In addition to summer administrative responsibilities, the chair is permitted to teach in the summer for additional compensation.
- Provide appropriate leadership to accomplish university, college, department, and program goals.
- Engage in constructive problem-solving and conflict management and make sound decisions.
- Communicate effectively with faculty and staff within the department, college, university, and diverse campus and community constituencies.
- Work collaboratively with the leadership of other academic and administrative units to develop appropriate policies and programs.
- Promote student success and faculty excellence in teaching, scholarship
- Ph.D. in social work or related field.
- Master's degree in social work from a CSWE-accredited university and two years of practice experience post-master's degree.
- Minimum of three years of full-time teaching experience in a CSWE-accredited program in higher education.
- Minimum of one year experience in higher education in an administrative role serving at least at the departmental level (Chair, Assistant chair, or program coordinator) preferred.
- Tenure and rank are negotiable based on the amount and level of teaching experience, service, and scholarly production.
- Evidence of teaching effectiveness, scholarly activity, and professional service to warrant appointment as associate professor.
- The ability to effectively manage multiple and sometimes competing priorities is essential.
- A background search will be required of the successful applicant.
- Preference will be given to candidates with training from a CSWE-accredited program who know and understand the CSWE accreditation process.
- Experience in online teaching and online program implementation. Including a working knowledge of Quality Matters (QM) guidelines for course development.
