The Opportunity

Fort Valley State University (FVSU), a unique comprehensive institution located in Central Georgia, is inviting applications and nominations for the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences position. As one of Georgia's historically black universities (HBCU) and the state's only 1890 Land-Grant Institution, FVSU offers a distinctive academic environment.

The University seeks a visionary, courageous, and skilled leader to be the next Dean of its College of Arts and Sciences. The next dean will be able to lead a strong college of arts and sciences that is eclectic and diverse in its research, creative activity, and program offerings. The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest of the three colleges within the University. Faculty provide the core curriculum for all undergraduate programs at FVSU. The College will require a dean with the leadership skills to harness the resources of a diverse curriculum, rich performance history, and the enthusiasm and undaunted pride of the larger community to chart the path toward its ambitious and bold future.

The Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences (Dean) plays a pivotal role in the academic team and is dedicated to supporting FVSU's mission of meeting the higher education needs of the state, region, and nation through innovative teaching and applied research. Reporting to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs (Provost), the Dean works closely with the Deans' Council and the President's Cabinet to assist in managing the College of Arts and Sciences.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serves as a liaison between the College and the Office of Academic Affairs.
  • Leads the implementation of the university's strategic plans at the College level.
  • Works closely with the other college deans and the Provost to formulate and implement the College's academic objectiveswithin the University's mission and objectives.
  • Partners with University Advancement to cultivate and steward donors as needed.
  • Conducts annual evaluations of the work of faculty members within the College.
  • Provides written recommendations concerning faculty members' retention, promotion, and tenure to the provost.
  • Prepares an annual report on progress toward the college and university's objectives, including funding and recommendations for future needs.
  • Works with the registrar and department chairs to oversee student registration, manage graduation audits, and coordinate the class schedule.
  • Partners with department chairs to recruit permanent and temporary faculty and staff.
  • Collaborates with the Office of Institutional Research to prepare and present exploratory analyses of college program enrollment, graduation, and retention trends.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Qualifications

The candidate must have a doctorate or terminal degree from a regionally accredited university and a graduate-level degree in a discipline represented by the College of Arts & Sciences. Distinguished scholarly credentials and stature appropriate for the rank of Professor in a college department are required. The successful candidate will have a strong record of scholarship.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE:

  • Administrative experience in higher education at the department chair level or higher.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage change.
  • Participatory management and leadership style that encourages and values input from others.
  • Ability to lead teams to achieve established goals.
  • Knowledgeable, or the ability to become knowledgeable, of the academic requirements of academic programs beyond those in the arts and sciences.
  • Proven academic leadership, administrative ability and experience.
  • Knowledge of online/distance learning technologies.
  • Experience in budget, planning, personnel, and student matters.
  • Commitment to high standards in education, research, and outreach.
  • Ability to develop and maintain productive relationships with on- and off-campus constituencies.
  • Experience in program reviews, assessment, and specialized accreditation.
  • An established record demonstrating the recruitment and retention of high-quality faculty and staff.
  • Strong record of scholarship, demonstrated by a history of significant research, publications, and contributions to their academic discipline.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with a high level of competency related to various technologies (i.e., Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, BANNER, etc.) utilized in an academic setting.
