Job Description Summary:
Serves as the Radiation Safety Coordinator for the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC). Assists the RSO with reviews and evaluations of work environments, programs, and procedures to control, eliminate, and prevent disease or injury caused by radioactive agents. Conducts inspections and assists with adherence to KUMC policies and procedures as well as laws and regulations governing the health and safety of individuals.
Job Description:
Job Responsibilities:
* Collecting and processing radioactive waste from research laboratories which will include handling 55-gallon containers that can weigh as much as 300 pounds. Tracking the decay-in-storage radioactive waste and managing documentation of radioactive waste records and coordinating with outside contractors to properly dispose of radioactive waste.
* Surveying laboratories to assure compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations. Includes tasks such as taking and analyzing wipes for radioactive contamination, surveying for radiation levels, assessing lab practices for compliance with safe work practices, and maintaining documentation.
* Coordinates calibration of survey meters and other instruments and ensures that they have been properly calibrated or properly stored out of service.
* Coordinates the radiation dosimetry program which will include:
- Distributing and receiving radiation badges;
- Mailing radiation badges off to an outside vendor;
- Managing records
- Analyzing and prescreening submissions to ensure compliance with federal regulations and institutional requirements;
- Determining readiness for committee review;
- Updating documentation for all types of new submissions; communicating with submitters (such as the KUMC Research Institute, centers/institutes, investigators, research staff, etc.) regarding regulatory requirements and committee's review;
- Accepting projects that meet the criteria for review by the Joint Human Research Subcommittee;
- Managing proviso process until final approval is obtained from Radiation Safety Committee (RSC)s.
* Assists with the proper shipments of Hazardous Materials and Dangerous Goods
* Aids in the handling and disposal of chemical and biological waste
Work Environment
Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
Required Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in relevant field (Health Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering). A combination of education and relevant experience may substitute for a degree on a year for year basis.
Work Experience:
- Radiation experience may substitute for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
- Demonstrated reliability and a proven work ethic.
- Must be capable of successfully passing an FBI background check.
Education: Master's degree in relevant field (Health Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering)
Work Experience:
- Experience with radiation safety, emergency response, Radiation Safety Committees
- Experience with academic research laboratories
- Strong oral and written communications skills and the ability to interact professionally with faculty and staff.
- Ability to use basic computer software: Word, Excel, Access.

Compensation Statement:
The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
