Position Summary

The Career Readiness Coach reports to the Executive Director for University Partnerships and Success Initiatives. The Career Readiness Coach is responsible for the implementation of career readiness programming for first-generation and under-resourced students. The focus is to assist students in aligning an academic pathway with career goals from application to APSU through their second year of college and developing programming to support student career readiness in alignment with labor market trends and data.

Austin Peay State University is a four-year public, doctoral-level university, with six colleges and four Chairs of Excellence. The University has an enrollment of over 9,000 students and is located in Clarksville, Tennessee, a community of an estimated 166,000 people located approximately 40 miles northwest of Nashville, TN.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Student coaching:
  • Facilitate individual/group career coaching sessions for students in designated majors on career opportunities, job and experience strategies, development of communication resources such as resume's, interviews, letters, and online profiles.
  • Plan/Develop/Facilitate/Assess new career events and initiatives to address career needs and create opportunities for engagement and connections with employers and alumni.
  • Partner with faculty, academic advisors and other staff to provide programming.
  • Collaborate with career services to advance the goals of the grant.
  • Collaborate with the Coordinator for the Purpose First Scholars Program, a learning community program for incoming first-year students targeted at first-generation and Pell-eligible students focused on early career pathway decisions and career readiness, to provide career readiness support for the cohort.
Data/Assessment:
  • Conduct and compile data including but not limited to appointments, programming, recruiting, and assessments.
  • Create learning outcomes for programs and conduct assessment and reports for the Director.
  • Track on campus student employment with in student cohort.
Campus Collaborations:
  • Provide development for on campus employers to more effectively develop career readiness skills of student employees.
  • Serve as a liaison for the office through work with college and departmental staff and faculty in support of career readiness, including participation on University committees, as needed.
  • Collaborate with admissions to provide career readiness tools to perspective students. (Career Coach)
  • Other related duties as assigned.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately.

  • Ability to interact in an effective and appropriate manner with diverse populations, the University community, and the public.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.
  • Ability to maintain files accurately, in paper and in software programs.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize competing deadlines.
  • Ability to efficiently operate a personal computer and associated software (Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.) as well as SunGard HE Banner.
Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree

  • * Minimum of two (2) years of full-time professional work experience in higher education, career services, or human resources working with students or employees on career exploration, development of career relevant skills and topics, and/or professional development.
  • Preferred: Hold a master's degree in higher education administration, college student personnel, counseling, or a related field and/or certified as a NACE Career Coach.
