Position Description
Provides primary care as part of a health care team in an ambulatory setting in a particular discipline. Provides patient education and counseling as well as physical assessment. May participate in teaching programs for students and other student residents. Work is performed under usual clinic conditions and requires a high degree of contact with patients, families, and other clinic personnel and outside professionals. Some positions in the classification require travel to outreach clinics and home visits, and participation in educational efforts and special programs that occur outside of normal working hours.
Major/Essential Functions
The functions of a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner include:
Graduated from an approved accredited nursing program; current RN license in the State of Texas or have the ability to transfer your license to Texas. Certification as a Nurse Practitioner in the appropriate nursing specialty from an approved certification program as recognized by the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners. Recognition by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners as an Advance Practitioner.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in intensive care and as an RN or Neonatal Nurse Practitioner in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

The functions of a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner include:
- Obtain health histories and perform comprehensive physical and gestational age assessments
- Collaborate with the Neonatologist regarding plan of care
- Order and interpret lab results and other diagnostic studies
- Develop differential diagnoses
- Develop/order therapeutic plan of care
- Maintain patient records
- Evaluate patient's response to plan of care and modify as needed
- Provide patient/family counseling and education
- Arrange for patient referrals/consultations
- Provide staff education
- Stabilize and transport ill infants to appropriate level of care
- Assist with obtaining operative/procedure consents
- Write orders
- Incorporate developmental care in patient care giving
- Promote family centered care and healthy infant-parent attachment
- Participate in patient rounds
- Collaborate with physicians from other disciplines
- Attend births
- Perform procedures necessary to aid in identifying a diagnosis
- Care for a case load of patients
- Participate in research studies
- Train/teach residents and students
