The division of Strategic Marketing and Communications at UMKC is looking for a creative, collaborative photographer to provide images to illustrate and enhance the marketing and communications materials for UMKC academic and administrative units. This visual storyteller will have strong organizational and relationship-building skills, plus experience in balancing and meeting deadlines.

Job Description

  • Capture well-crafted photo images for use on electronic and printed projects as assigned. Range of materials may include websites, brochures, magazines, invitations, etc.;

  • Maintain a photo library that can be shared by other team members;

  • Photograph campus events for internal clients as well as for public relations;

  • Work as a member of a team to complete projects (including other photographers, designers, project managers and relationship managers), as assigned by the creative director;

  • Maintain proficiency in the use of photography equipment, computer hardware and software used by the industry and adhere to policies and procedures of Strategic Marketing and Communications;

  • Troubleshoots problems with the equipment and make simple repairs;

  • Make recommendations on equipment needs;

  • Take portraits of faculty, staff, administrators and others as assigned;

  • Accurately estimate and track time and costs;

  • Other duties as assigned.


This position will be 30 hours per work week and is a benefit eligible staff position. 

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in art, graphics or a related area or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Two to three years' experience in commercial photography (event photography a plus).

  • Proficiency in the following software in Mac format: Adobe CC including PhotoShop and Lightroom; and Microsoft Office.

  • Knowledge of how to optimize photo for use in various formats, such as print collateral, social media, publications, news articles and websites.

  • Good people skills, including the ability to interact effectively with varied persons and personalities from all levels of an organization.

  • Ability to work on multiple projects at once, prioritize accordingly, communicate progress and meet deadlines in a changing environment.

  • Ability to think strategically about how multiple projects fit together as a whole.

  • Business acumen on how to grow our photo enterprise in order to best support university priorities.

  • The patience and perseverance to get the best possible shot.

Anticipated Hiring Range

$24.94 to $26.92 per hour, commensurate on education, experience, and internal equity.
