Walla Walla Community College is accepting applications to fill the part-time role of Nursing Lab Assistant on the Walla Walla Campus.

General Responsibilities:

This position supports the mission of the Nursing Program by assisting the Nursing Faculty Lab Educator in the following areas: maintenance of lab space and equipment, cleaning/disinfecting of lab supplies/equipment, re-stocking of lab supplies, changing linens/monitoring laundry, and preparing the skills lab for use by Nursing and Nursing Assistant students.

With respect to the larger organization's mission and vision, this position promotes "high quality educational experiences" by preparing a safe Nursing Skills Lab that is well maintained and well stocked for student use. It supports producing a "highly skilled workforce" by ensuring that equipment needed for nursing skills is available and in safe working condition.

Essential Functions:

Prepare the Nursing Skills Lab for nursing student skills labs and simulation activities
Tasks include:
  • Assist with the maintenance of the lab space and equipment to ensure a safe, comfortable, and well-lighted practice lab environment
  • Ensure that lab supplies/equipment for nursing skills are used in a correct and safe manner by students
  • Follow faculty directions for lab station set-up, cleaning/disinfecting of lab supplies/equipment, and return of supplies/equipment to storage in an orderly manner
  • Change bed linens as needed, monitor use of laundry and notify Purchasing Dept. for laundry pick-up (or take laundry to a specified location), restock supplies with clean linens
  • Restock lab stations as directed for student practice
  • Monitor sink areas for cleanliness and supplies (soap/paper towels); refill hand sanitizers as needed
  • Assist with optimum access to the lab for student practice time; assist with monitoring of student practice time log
  • Prepare lab as directed for transition to Nursing Assistant lab and testing
  • Maintain effective working relationships with people of varied social, cultural, and educational backgrounds
Assess and replace supply inventory for Nursing Skills Practice Lab
Tasks include:
  • Assist lab faculty with inventory, re-ordering, and re-stocking of lab supplies
  • Assist the Nursing Lab Educator with estimating the quantity and quality of supplies and materials needed to provide nursing students to be able to practice with up-to-date, high-quality disposable and non-disposable equipment.
Participate in Nursing and Allied Health department and campus meetings
Tasks include:
  • Attend relevant Health Science meetings/updates and college-wide activities as directed.

Applicants must demonstrate (training will be offered after hire for some of the following):
  • Experience and expertise in nursing skills and use of supplies/equipment
  • Clear verbal and written communication
  • Commitment to diversity with experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds
Required Qualifications:
Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered at the discretion of the college.
  • Nursing degree (LPN or RN)
  • Successfully pass required background checks
  • Active Washington State LPN or RN license or ability to obtain upon hire
  • Minimum of one year of experience in nursing practice
Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
  • Two or more years demonstrated clinical experience in acute care or related field
  • Familiarity with the WWCC Nursing Program and curriculum
Conditions/Terms of Employment

This part-time temporary position (up to 17-hours per week) is located at the Walla Walla Campus.

This work will primarily take place in the WWCC Nursing Skills Practice Lab. There is medical equipment, hospital beds, and nursing skills equipment that could present a hazard if not in good working condition and appropriately used. The job may require the use of a computer that may present ergonomic hazards or repetitive use injury. There is lifting required of some practice equipment and manikins that could pose a hazard if good body mechanics and ergonomic principles are not followed.

This part-time position will work no more than 17 hours per week per quarter in 9 consecutive months, typically Monday-Friday. There may be specific times of the academic year when flexibility of work hours is needed as lab practice needs fluctuate. The schedule is developed in collaboration with the Nursing Lab Educator and Clarkston Nursing Administrator to provide adequate assistance before and during peak lab usage.

Occasional local travel may be required to obtain donated practice equipment and supplies from local hospitals and care agencies. Rarely will travel be required to another campus.

This worker must understand the proper and safe use of electronic hospital beds, practice manikins, vital sign equipment, intravenous pumps, nursing skills equipment including, but not limited to syringes and needles, ostomy, wound, and skeletal traction equipment.

The Nursing Lab Assistant primarily interacts with nursing faculty and staff, Allied Health faculty and staff, and nursing students. Clear, respectful communication with customers is essential, as is the ability to provide a supportive, encouraging, non-threatening lab environment for nursing students.

The worker is expected to be competent in the use of computers and printers.
