Brief Summary:

This Director leads MSU Denver's Office of Planning, Design and Construction (PDC) within the Department of Facilities with direct supervision of three employees, and in partnership with the tri-institutional Auraria Campus' shared services provider, the Auraria Higher Education Center (AHEC). The PDC Director is one of seven direct reports to the Vice President for Administration/COO and sits on the Vice President for the Administration Branch's senior leadership team.

Scope of work:

The Office of Planning, Design, and Construction is involved in a variety of ongoing campus efforts across its three functional areas, with the most active engagement from the Director being in the construction project management function.  This Director will skillfully manage and contribute to these efforts in compliance with the Colorado Office of the State Architect, while prioritizing stakeholder satisfaction, and resource stewardship.   
  • Planning efforts include campus master planning, space use analyses, long range State of Colorado capital project planning/reporting, feasibility studies, and program planning.
  • Design efforts include the development of design standards, state procurement efforts, managing architecture firm relationships, and overseeing schematic and design development phases of construction projects.
  • Construction efforts include construction documentation, project management, stakeholder engagement, and continuous monitoring/reporting to ensure construction projects' scope, budget, and schedule are met.  The Director will actively manage construction projects themselves.

  • Serves as the primary operational liaison between the Office of Planning, Design, and Construction and other MSU Denver departments to develop infrastructure projects.
  • The position is one of two Directors within the Department of Facilities, who must work in close partnership together on building out the department's structure, developing department goals, and completing Colorado capital submission paperwork.
  • Is a co-champion alongside the Strategy Branch's infrastructure team to plan, execute, and inform the community of the reinvestment in and development of the Auraria Campus.
  • Represents MSU Denver on the tri-institutional Auraria Campus at points of intersection including campus master planning, land use, shared buildings projects/use, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Administration Branch: The Department of Facilities is one of four departments within the Administration Branch, including Finance, Information Technology Services, and Human Resources.
  • Department of Facilities: MSU Denver's Department of Facilities is comprised of less than ten people.
    • Office of Planning, Design and Construction: The Director of PDC will lead, manage, and be an active contributor to a team comprised of a Campus Planner and two Project Managers.
    • Office of Operations and Maintenance: The Director of O&M oversees two Facility Managers, an EH&S position, and the Office and Fiscal Manager for the Department and works in partnership with AHECs O&M staff.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Planning, Construction Management, Architecture or related field.
  • Previous work experience in a higher-education setting
  • Supervision of professional staff.
  • Eight years of construction project management experience.
  • Intermediate computer skills and general knowledge of MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and project management software.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Construction management, Architecture, Planning, Business Administration or related field.
  • Ten years of experience in a higher education setting as a director level or above in the Department of Planning, Design and Construction.
  • Experience with State of Colorado reporting/compliance processes including procurement, capital development, and state architect requirements.
  • Ongoing professional development credentials (such as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certification, Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification, etc.)
Salary for Announcement

The salary range for this position is $90,600 - $151,300. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based upon a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, training, and qualifications.

Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm
