Position Summary  

Seattle Colleges is looking for innovative and dedicated faculty members, who have a demonstrated commitment to working within a college community that is diverse and serves students from a broad spectrum of socioeconomic and academic backgrounds. Faculty will teach part-time in a wide range of Aviation Maintenance Technology (Airframe & Powerplant) courses. Successful applicants will have the ability to work effectively with students, colleagues, staff and others in a campus climate that promotes cultural diversity and multicultural understanding in an urban environment.  

This position is a part time, non-tenure track faculty position that will provide instruction in the FAA-regulated Aviation Maintenance Program. This position may teach during the day or the evening depending on the instructional needs of SSC. The teaching requirement is for 6 hours of contact each day. Classes are offered each quarter for nine weeks.

Additional time may be required for student advising as well as campus and departmental activities and committees. Current hours of instruction are 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Instructional hours will depend on the schedule needed for coverage of the classes offered and the subjects taught.

Specific teaching assignments will be dependent on the instructor's background and scheduling. Successful applicants may be invited to teach at Seattle Central College. 

Candidates should be willing to teach in a variety of formats such as in-class, hybrid, online and varied class times including days, evenings, and weekends according to program needs.  

This position is governed by a collective bargaining agreement with representation by AFT-Seattle.

What you bring as a candidate: 


This faculty position must possess current certification from the Federal Aviation Administration in both Airframe and Powerplant. Candidates should have current work experience in General or Commercial Aviation and possess a broad base of experience that will enable delivery of current industry practices to the students enrolled in the program. Candidates must have a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively. Candidates must be able to work well with diverse populations and demonstrate sensitivity to cultural differences. Other required education, experience, and abilities include:
  • Speaking, standing, sitting.
  • Follow instructions, policies & procedures
  • Operate various computer programs
  • Analyze data
  • Record student attendance, projects, and test scores
  • Evaluate performance of others
  • Managing resources and direct projects
  • Instruct students in all aspects of FAA General, Airframe and Powerplant categories.
  • Provide a supportive and culturally sensitive environment for students in the program.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to maintain and improve the aviation program.
  • Participate in college-wide activities.
  • An understanding of the goals and role of the community college. 
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to teach multiple levels of on the topic of study. 
  • Innovative teaching methods including the use of technology and collaborative learning. 
  • The ability to work collaboratively with others in a professional setting.   
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous teaching experience
  • Certificate of Completion in CPR/AED/First-Aid 
(Any Equivalent Combination of Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education and Experience)

The Position: 

  • typically works in an office environment and uses a computer, telephone and other office equipment as needed to perform duties. The noise level in the work environment is typical of that of an office.  
  • encounters frequent interruptions throughout the workday.  
  • is regularly required to provide 1:1 support, present to small groups, and work at a computer exercising repetitive hand motion with or without reasonable accommodation. 
  • Ability to perform a range of physical motions, exerting up to 25 pounds; lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds; standing, walking, sitting for long periods of time, kneeling, squatting, and stooping; and traversing up and down stairs.
