Reporting directly to the president, the Vice President for University Advancement will be a critical strategic leader responsible for the development and articulation of a comprehensive strategic advancement plan to amplify Prairie View A&M University's (PVAMU) identity and impact, broaden awareness, increase the visibility of its achievements, and cultivate transformational philanthropic support to advance the university's mission.

The Vice President for University Advancement is the chief advancement officer for the university and advises the President on all matters pertaining to the management and operation of the offices of Development, Alumni Relations, and University Marketing and Communication, in addition to serving as the PVAMU liaison with the Prairie View A&M Foundation (PVAMF) Board of Trustees.

As the inaugural Vice President for University Advancement, the incumbent will be responsible for leading the design and integration of the division in the University ecosystem to support and achieve university priorities and goals.

The Vice President will promote a positive image and foster positive internal and external relationships by communicating and interacting with constituents in matters related to University Advancement. The incumbent will represent the President and the university in various community, state, regional, and national activities designed to promote PVAMU and communicate the needs, priorities, and aspirations of the institution.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Oversee all Division of Advancement programs and provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to direct reports and, by extension, all team members;
  • Establish and oversee priorities for the Division ensuring that managers and staff are focused on those strategies and tactics that are essential to each unit's performance compared to articulated goals and metrics;
  • Assess, build, manage, and lead a high-performing team of professionals.
  • Evaluate staff members, mentor, and coach, develop a strong sense of teamwork, and establish an environment of collaboration, nimbleness, problem-solving, creative thinking, and alumni and donor centered activity.
  • Lead the development and implementation of systems infrastructure to support an emerging division of Advancement to include policies, procedures, technologies, and knowledge transfer across the university.


  • Leads the strategic planning and program development for development and alumni relations to ensure that the university is successfully advancing the university's relationships with those corporations, organizations, individuals, and families with the greatest philanthropic ability as the university seeks to accelerate the level and pace of transformational gifts.
  • Oversees the management of all donor and partner relationships to build a robust pipeline of mid- to major- to principal-level gifts that will sustain the university fundraising success; leads by example through the management of a (reasonable)portfolio of the university's top donors and donor prospects; partners effectively with key administrative and academic colleagues across campus;
  • Serves as the primary liaison to PVAMFBoard of Trustees;

Alumni Relations

Oversee the development and facilitation of programs and initiatives designed to engage alumni and former students--such programs and initiatives focus on engaging widespread and diverse participation, and intentional efforts are made to include underrepresented and varied alumni generations in engagement opportunities.

Marketing and Communications

Oversee the development and implementation of a compelling, comprehensive, and unified communications and marketing strategy and program that delivers powerful and cohesive messaging and storytelling, enhances the brand, and furthers the goals of the entire university, including its individual colleges and administrative units as well as campuses and locations worldwide.

Professional Qualifications and Personal Qualities

  • Minimum Bachelor's degree. Master's or terminal degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 15 years of progressive leadership experience, with time spent at the executive or senior level, and a track record of leading a cross-functional development, alumni relations, and/or marketing and communications team within a complex organization.
  • Proven ability to raise large-scale resources, exceptional track record of working with a wide range of donors, and securing significant investments in support of the university's strategic priorities.
  • Superior interpersonal skills associated with building strong, authentic, collaborative relationships with colleagues, at all levels, external to and across the organization, and earning trust by working effectively across functions;
  • Experience leading and building strong teams of highly functioning and collaborative individuals, as well as an exemplary background in recruitment and retention of talented staff; track record of building staff skills and experience and of preparing the division for growth and more creative approaches.
  • Knowledge of and experience with using data to drive strategy; ability to shift priorities in response to results and trends; and highly skilled in the areas of planning, critical thinking, and analysis;
  • An ability to develop professionals by providing clear and direct feedback in a manner that is motivated by a desire to help individuals grow while advancing the overarching goals of the university and the needs of the team.
