Shepherd University invites nominations and applications for the position of Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. The search committee will begin immediate review of applications and will continue until the position is filled. The new Provost will assume office in 2025.

Shepherd University is a public liberal arts university located in historic and scenic Shepherdstown, West Virginia, on the banks of the Potomac River. Seventy miles west of Washington, DC, Shepherd has an enrollment of over 3,000 undergraduate and 180 graduate students. Additionally, Shepherd takes pride in its pre-professional programs including business, nursing, education, and social work. Academic offerings include over 80 undergraduate majors and six graduate programs, including one doctoral program, that ensure the essential skills for personal and professional success in the 21st century, including proficiency in written and oral communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, and collaboration. Reporting to the President and serving as a member of the University’s executive leadership team, the Provost provides collaborative academic leadership and internal management for faculty, academic staff, and students in a diverse and growing learning community. The ideal candidate will collaborate with constituents across campus and in the community to ensure student enrollment, engagement, retention, fundraising, and success. Direct reports to the Provost include the Associate Provost, the Assistant Vice President, the Deans of the University’s three colleges, and the Associate Dean of Student Academic Enrichment.

The successful candidate will possess a terminal degree in a discipline compatible with academic programs offered by Shepherd University, an outstanding record of teaching and scholarship equivalent to earn the rank of tenured full professor, and an excellent record of achievement as an administrator with experience as a department chair and dean or equivalent positions. The successful candidate will demonstrate a record of strong support for student recruitment, retention, and achievement, a solid record of academic leadership demonstrating entrepreneurial thinking through innovative academic programming and assessment, oversight of university accreditation processes, experience with online academic programs, and proven civic engagement through involvement with communities and public agencies. A high level of personal energy and initiative, a commitment to the liberal arts and sciences, active support of preprofessional programs, skills in communication, and financial and organizational management skills are essential. Candidates should highlight successful experience with fundraising. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
