Job Description:

The Assistant Director of Annual Giving is part of a team responsible for raising more than $10 million yearly in direct support of Washington and Lee University's operating budget. The primary responsibility of this position is maximizing Annual Fund gifts to Washington and Lee through management of the Young Alumni Annual Giving program.

The Assistant Director will bring organization, collaboration, energy, and enthusiasm to the work.

Essential Functions:

  • Under the direction of the Director and/or Associate Director of Annual Giving, oversees strategic fundraising efforts and management of class agents (non-Reunion) for the classes fourteen years post-graduation excluding the 5th Reunion and the 10th Reunion
  • Manages a prospect pool of approximately 150+ AF Young Alumni leadership proposals. This includes the responsibility of direct solicitation and gift closure, collaborating with leadership, parent, and annual giving colleagues
  • Strategizes and implements Young Alumni annual giving campaign across mediums to meet donor participation goals. Mediums include, but are not limited to, email, texting, phone, phonathon, mailings, social media and ThankView videos. Ensures appropriate stewardship for Young Alumni to demonstrate impact in collaboration with donor relations team
  • Conducts data analysis for young alumni class giving patterns, campaign and appeals effectiveness, and areas of interests for support by each class. Must perform basic data analysis and database management.
  • Contributes to overall Annual Giving Calendar including the schedule for and progress of Young Alumni Annual Giving.
  • Travels to visit alumni constituents, class agents and prospects.
  • Manages solicitations for the Generals Club, an athletics fund, in collaboration with the Director and the Director of Athletics. This includes print and digital solicitation, data analysis, and collaboration with communications colleagues.
  • Collaborates with Advancement colleagues on events including, but not limited to, Young Alumni Weekend, All Volunteer Weekend, Welcome to the City Chapter events, and Presidential travel
  • Collaborates with Annual Giving colleagues and advancement operations colleagues on internal reporting functions.
  • Participates in development meetings, trainings, conferences, and other training & education events to stay abreast of important development issues and successful annual fund trends. Networks with colleagues from peer institutions to learn from and stay competitive with their programs and to acquire pertinent best practices strategies.
  • Provides assistance to the Director and other development team members, as needed.
  • Represents Advancement interests to other campus departments and to the Washington and Lee community. Fosters strong connections with broader campus community.
  • Additional related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required. One or more years of fundraising or related experience is desirable. Fundraising experience may include student fundraising or phonathon experience.
  • Ability to communicate with professionalism and creativity to a varied constituency. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.
  • Demonstrated initiative, careful attention to detail, the ability to work within specific deadlines, prioritize, maintain multiple tasks are important qualifications. Ability to work independently and creatively in a collaborative team-oriented environment is important. Evening and weekend work is required for attendance at major University events such as Alumni Weekend and Young Alumni Weekend.
  • The role requires travel to visit alumni constituents, class agents and prospects.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license
