POSITION SUMMARY

This individual will have leadership responsibility for designing and fostering a comprehensive and dynamic development program that results in significant supplemental resources (money and volunteers) to support IMSA’s legislative charges and mission. In addition, the Director leads a team of development professionals responsible for donor and alumni relationship engagement and stewardship on behalf of the Academy. This position reports to Chief Public Affairs & Development Officer and has extensive interaction with Academy leadership and with the Board of Directors of the IMSA Fund for Advancement of Education, a 501c3 not-for-profit corporation that raises, invests and distributes gifts and grants from the private sector to support the Academy’s work.

The internationally recognized Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy® (IMSA) develops creative, ethical leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. As a teaching and learning laboratory created by the State of Illinois, IMSA enrolls academically talented Illinois students (grades 10–12) in its advanced, residential college preparatory program. It also serves thousands of educators and students in Illinois and beyond through innovative instructional programs that foster imagination and inquiry.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Executive Director of Development will be responsible for but not limited to fulfilling these essential accountabilities:

  • Lead and manage the design, implementation, evaluation and continual improvement of supplemental resource development (gifts, grants, sponsorships, gifts in kind, volunteer services) by IMSA Fund and IMSA
  • Lead and manage the development team; supervise and evaluate direct reports which include the Major Gifts and Senior Campaign Manager, Grants Administrator, Financial Manager and Accounts Payable Clerk.
  • Proactively and continually provide strategic fundraising direction and counsel for IMSA leaders, the IMSA Fund Board of Directors and other fundraising volunteers
  • Design and direct major gifts, endowment and planned giving programs
  • Identify, cultivate and solicit major gift, endowment and planned giving prospects
  • Engage and develop partnerships with corporations and corporate foundations that advance Academy priorities and projects
  • Support fundraising events by securing sponsorships, partnerships or other needs
  • Champion and ensure high standards of philanthropy (e.g. AFP Code of Ethical Principles and Standards, Donor Bill of Rights, CASE Principles of Practice for Fundraising Professionals at Educational Institutions)
  • Ability to travel as needed
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A proven record of building, sustaining and scaling successful fundraising programs
  • Minimum of seven years of multifaceted fundraising experience, with at least three years in an educational environment preferred
  • Demonstration of significant professional learning in the field
  • Master’s degree strongly preferred; Bachelor’s degree required
  • A proven record of success inspiring, developing and supervising staff and volunteers
  • A proven record of success collaborating with board members
  • Broad and deep knowledge of corporate, foundation, and individual donor philanthropy programs and practices
  • Understanding of legal and ethical standards and a “strong moral compass”
  • An appreciation and understanding of working with diverse populations
  • Mastery of complex relational databases and current technologies, experience with Raiser’s Edge, online giving and social networking sites preferred
  • Strong interpersonal, collaboration and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work with individuals at all levels of a complex organization
  • Previous experience developing and/or leading alumni engagement programs
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to analyze and resolve problems quickly and wisely

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 

Work is performed in an office setting with minimal exposure to health or safety hazards. Substantial time is spent working on a computer. This role generally requires mobility, written and verbal communication, hearing and visual capabilities. COMPENSATION

This is a 12 month exempt position. Starting salary approximately $98,000 and is commensurate with training and experience expected at this level of employment. The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy offers an excellent comprehensive benefits package including health and retirement benefits. The State Universities Retirement System (SURS) is reciprocal with other Illinois public retirement systems such as the Teachers’ Retirement Systems of Illinois (TRS) and the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF).
