Erikson Institute, a premier graduate school in child development, early childhood education, social work, and child life, in Chicago, IL, is seeking to hire an Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor (tenure-track/tenured) with a research agenda inclusive of equity and justice to join our Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP) Endorsed graduate child life program. Graduates of the child life program receive a Master of Science in Child Development, being eligible to sit for Child Life certification.

This Open Rank search for a Tenure-Track/Tenured Professor in Child Life will complement the program’s existing strengths in developing Certified Child Life Specialists for work in hospitals and community-based health centers. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strength—or the potential to develop strengths—in scholarship, teaching, community engagement, and systems change. In addition, competitive candidates will demonstrate scholarly expertise in one or more focal areas (e.g. child and adolescent development; emotional safety and trauma-informed care; systemic healthcare inequity and medical racism; disability and ableism).

We seek a deeply collaborative colleague interested in engaging in impactful research with disinvested communities, innovative program development, and dynamic teaching. We are seeking a colleague committed to diversity, inclusion, and racial, social, and economic justice and working with the diverse population of young children, families, and communities that call the Chicagoland area home. Erikson Institute especially seeks to recruit and retain scholars who have lived experiences within racially, ethnically, gender or sexuality, (dis)ability, and/or socio-economically minoritized communities.

This 10-month position includes funded time for research and scholarship. The position includes teaching a 2/2 course load per academic year, mentoring students, and engaging in program service activities—including committees, curriculum development, and program planning. Depending on the candidate’s experience, hiring will be considered at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate or Full Professor. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A PhD or other terminal doctoral degree (e.g., PsyD, EdD) in field closely related to child life

  • 2+ years working as a child life specialist, in pediatric healthcare, or adjacent setting

  • Ability to foster collaborative and positive relationships with faculty, staff, students, and external partners

  • Academic scholarship or clinical research experience with the potential to significantly impact the field of child life as visible in scholarly record of research presentations and publications

  • Demonstrated record of or potential for obtaining external funding

  • Ethical standards that align with the Child Life Code of Ethics

  • University teaching experience

  • Record of working with ethnically, racially, and culturally diverse communities

  • Expertise and/or potential in graduate student mentoring and advisement

  • Experience, expertise, or interest in curricular innovations prioritizing social justice

Preferred Qualifications

  • An earned certificate in child life

  • An undergraduate and/or graduate degree in child development or closely aligned field

  • Successful record of university teaching online and in person

  • Capacity and interest to engage in program evaluation and ongoing program improvement
