JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Director of Community Driven Impact will provide leadership, management, planning, and implementation of a broad portfolio of educational and research initiatives offered by the Center, sustaining and growing the Center’s community-facing work within Philadelphia and also make learnings from research and practice accessible back to Penn State stakeholders who are interested in learning about social-justice models of engagement. This position will play a critical role in achieving Penn State’s purpose as a land-grant university, advancing its mission for the public good.

Community Engagement and Leadership Development:

● Provide strategic vision, leadership, management, planning, and implementation of urban community engagement through a broad portfolio of research and educational initiatives offered at the Penn State Center Philadelphia.

● Provide consultation to groups and organizations that share core social justice values; develop relationships with key community stakeholders.

● Co-design community engagement and leadership development initiatives that assist Philadelphia community members and academic partners in implementing changemaking knowledge and skills.

● Develop and direct new and enhance existing development opportunities for community members and co-researcher teams and ensure alignment with Center strategic priorities and external community priorities.

● Supervise community consultants as needed, including interviewing, selecting, training, mentoring, oversight, and instruction on techniques, as well as consultation on project work.

● Facilitate complex initiatives with a diverse range of community stakeholders and relevant university partners.

● Build a broad portfolio of community champions and ambassadors who further the Center’s strategic plan through facilitation of annual cohorts and management of the Seeding Change Leadership Program.

● Engage diverse audiences in the design and delivery of compelling content and meaningful, evidence-based programs.

● Identify appropriate partners within and outside the University to advance strategic initiatives.

Research and Seed Grant Management:

● Work with the Director of Participatory Research to document and synthesize the Center’s impactful portfolio of education and research initiatives that promote PAR and the Center’s community-driven initiatives for social justice and social change.

● Contribute Community Engagement expertise to PAR projects via collaborative work with the Director of Participatory Research and develop skills in PAR as a methodology.

● Support the implementation of participatory action research (PAR) as a best practice in community engagement.

● Contribute to research and ensure that research findings contribute to community impact and enhanced community engagement.

● Continue, revise, and scale an ongoing portfolio of reciprocal community-based initiatives by supporting individual faculty, staff, and community members with seed grants to support Philadelphia based research, student engagement and other community initiatives via the Seeding Change Grant Program.

● Track, evaluate, and revise programs and strategic initiatives to address changing needs.

● Develop and track key performance indicators and metrics.

● Support new Director of Participatory Research in creating and carrying out stages of a work plan to establish PAR in Philadelphia and create a plan for scaling beyond.

Training/Mentorship:

● Develop strong relationships with Philadelphia-based leaders and community members and build opportunities for critical reflection, mentorship, individual and organizational development, relationship building etc.

● Co-design community-based leadership and training opportunities, including mentorship of community-based leaders and facilitation of group processes that lead to collective and personal growth and social change.

● Provide consultation with faculty/staff members as well as with collaborating community organizations and leaders to ensure the process, deliverables, relationship building, continuity and necessary shifts that are inevitable in community engagement work.

● Support Penn State faculty and staff in developing skills to engage communities through entry level and advanced consultation and development opportunities.

● Explore expansion of cross-institution and community opportunities for collaborating on training opportunities and use of participatory methodologies to increase the Center’s community impact and extend the Center’s visibility and influence.

Penn State Center Community Responsibilities:

● Collaborate with the Director of Participatory Research in the implementation of relevant strategic plan initiatives.

● Contribute to the Center’s current practices and new initiatives by creating systems to incorporate community feedback into decision making and project design.

● Develop and manage budgets to complete project-related administrative and budgetary responsibilities as needed.

● Represent the Center’s work on internal and external task forces and other organizational teams to increase awareness and visibility of community-driven engagement and participatory action research as best practices.

● Work strategically and collaboratively to develop and implement marketing strategies for programs and services.

● At the direction of the Associate VP and Director of Community Engagement for Outreach, manage and/or operate regional university-wide events such as Alumni Meetings, K-12 events, Outreach workshops, etc.

Education and Experience:

Typically requires a Bachelors degree plus 8 years of relevant experience. Or, an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Masters degree is preferred. Experience required supervising direct/indirect reports. This is a limited-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with possibility of re-funding.
