Reporting to the Director of Athletics, the Head Football Coach must be enthusiastic about the opportunity to bring back football to the University and provide strategic leadership for the future of the Football program while supporting the wider mission and goals of the University. The Coach is responsible for all aspects of coaching the team including recruiting, fitness training, practice, scheduling, and travel. The Coach will advocate for the importance of the football program within the campus community and among alumni, university friends, and the larger Kerrville and regional community. The Coach will serve as a role model of the high standards expected of our student-athletes. Furthermore, the Coach will have department and team fundraising responsibilities in conjunction with the Athletic Director, Coaching staff, and Development Office, as well public relations and media responsibilities to promote the University, Athletics, and the Football program. The successful candidate will have experience recruiting students and cultivating friends of the University to meet annual enrollment, retention, and fundraising goals. Program Development

  • Develop a short-term plan for and long-term vision of Schreiner’s football program.
  • Establish goals, objectives, and expectations aligned with the University’s mission.
  • Launch an annual character development program for the team that promotes excellence, integrity, and leadership.
  • Develop a program that is highly competitive with the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference of NCAA Division III.

Recruiting and Talent Acquisition

  • Develop annual and long-term recruiting strategies in collaboration with the Athletics Director and Admissions that reflects our commitment to rural students, diversity, and high-quality student-athletes
  • Manages roster size in recruiting and retention with a roster goal of 100 student-athletes
  • Evaluate and scout potential recruits both locally and nationally.
  • Build relationships with high school coaches and athletes to generate interest.
  • Recruit student-athletes who will have a positive impact on the program and campus.
  • Develop best-in-class campus visits in coordination with Admissions.
  • Develop, promote, and manage a summer camp for prospective players and the regional community in collaboration with Auxiliary Services.

Team Management and Coaching

  • Hire and manage assistant coaches and support staff.
  • Prepare timely conference and non-conference schedules for submission to the Athletics Director.
  • Develop practice schedules and game plans.
  • Organize and lead effective team practices for traditional and non-traditional seasons.
  • Provide coaching and guidance during games and practice.
  • Manage all aspects of home games, including coordination of facilities and officials, in collaboration with Athletics Administration.
  • Make travel arrangements for road games and trips.
  • Ensure athletes conduct themselves appropriately on trips and when serving as a representative of the University.
  • Ensure a supportive and positive team culture that encourages academic success and personal growth.
  • Prioritize the safety of all personnel and spaces.
  • Ensure proper conditioning and medical treatment, including compliance with any medical restrictions.

Student-Athlete Development and Retention

  • Monitor and support the academic progress of the team, ensuring compliance with eligibility.
  • Mentor players on and off the field.
  • Develop team’s skills, techniques, and tactical understanding of the game.
  • Intervene in support of player’s collegiate success by responding to requests for support from campus offices and connecting players to support services.
  • Work collaboratively with Student Servies and Residence Life staff to meet student needs and to notify them of and/or respond to issues related to student behavior and the student code of conduct.
  • Ensure all staff for the team utilize Schreiner Insight.
  • Develop off-ramps for players who are no longer part of the team.
  • Coordinate with the University’s food services to ensure proper nutrition is available for the team.
  • Recommend athletes for awards.
  • Promote sportsmanship, respect, teamwork, discipline, and character.
  • Compliance and Regulations
  • Know all the current rules, guidelines, and compliance requirements and develop a process for staying up to date with these requirements.
  • Ensure program, coaches, and student-athletes are in absolute compliance with college, conference, and NCAA rules and regulations.

Fundraising and Friendraising

  • Actively cultivate positive relationships with key stakeholders, including employee colleagues, alumni, student body, and local community.
  • Actively cultivate a positive relationship with the coaching staff at KISD.
  • Establish fundraising expectations and strategies with Athletics Director and Advancement.
  • Meet annual and long-term fundraising expectations both for the team and for Athletics.
  • Travel to meet alumni and supporters or prospective supporters of the program.
  • Host a weekly, livestreamed talk show when the team is in season.


  • Effectively manage the entire team budget.
  • Accurately process business-related paperwork: requisitions for purchase orders, travel forms, credit card purchases and receipts, travel advances, and reimbursements.
  • Take pride in coaching a competitive program without having all the resources of other schools in the conference.
  • Support the activities of the Athletics division through presence, participation, and utilization of the team.
  • Fully participate in the various activities of campus.
  • Participate in SCAC meetings.
  • Work with the SU Sports Information Coordinator to ensure that all social media, roster, and website expectations are met.
  • Assume responsibility for the purchase, inventory, and maintenance (and, as necessary, repair) of uniforms, supplies, and equipment.
  • Facilitate communication between employees, students, parents, and others.
  • Maintain appropriate expectations for confidentiality.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Experience starting a collegiate football program preferred.
  • Prior head coaching experience preferred.
  • Prior collegiate coaching experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in scheduling games, practice, and travel.
  • Proficiency in preparation and management of budgets.
  • Ability to relate to student-athletes.
  • Ability to recruit and retain quality student-athletes.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work as university team member.
  • Ability to travel overnight with team.
  • Ability to become certified in CPR, First Aid, and AED (automatic external defibrillator) - Updated annually.
  • Knows and abides by policies of Schreiner University, SCAC, and NCAA.
  • Valid Coaching license throughout employment.
  • Must have a valid Texas driver’s license, related insurance, and good driving record. (CDL License is preferred)


  • Out of town overnight travel for intercollegiate athletic contests, meetings, conferences and recruiting efforts using personal, university, or rental vehicle.
  • Maintain general office hours in off season.
  • Weekend and holiday work schedule when necessary.
  • Occasional overtime work required during season and post season play/recruiting/meetings
  • 90% walking or standing during season and practice
