Major/Essential Functions

The Chair is a member of the faculty who must maintain a record of professional success in the field and should expect to participate actively (approximately 50% time) in at least two of the following activities in addition to the duties as Chair: teaching, public health industry service, public health practice, and/or scholarship.

The overall responsibility of the Chair is to lead and develop faculty, both individually and as a community of scholars. The Chair acts on behalf of faculty and on behalf of the School's administration and leadership, and he/she must exercise these dual responsibilities with maturity, stewardship, and care.
  • Support the continuous and evolving professional development of each faculty member individually.
  • Help build a community of scholars and a culture among faculty that is productive, mutually supportive, student-oriented, and mission-oriented.
  • Maintain and strengthen a positive relationship between faculty and administration that empowers faculty and creates a positive work environment for faculty, staff, and leadership of the School.
  • Promote faculty, particularly related to their scholarship and service, to other schools of the Health Sciences Center, helping faculty to negotiate meaningful and professionally productive collaborations.
  • Recruit and retain talented faculty to fulfill the needs and missions of the Department, School, and Health Sciences Center.
Required Qualifications
  • PhD, DrPH, or equivalent degree in public health or closely related field.
  • A record of sustained accomplishment in three or more of the following:  teaching, public health industry service, academic administration, public health practice, and/or scholarship.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Credentials to hold tenure and to be appointed at an academic rank of Associate Professor or Professor at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.
  • Evidence of successful leadership in an university setting.
  • Strong evidence of effective interpersonal, collaborative, and communication skills and extraordinary emotional intelligence.
