The Department of English at Utah Tech University (UT), in the picturesque red-rock southwestern city of St. George, Utah, invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor of English, with an emphasis in Rhetoric and Composition and specializing in working with at-risk students, to begin July 1, 2024. We are particularly interested in candidates who can draw upon their doctoral emphases in ways that complement both lower-division composition courses and our upper-division class offerings.
The English department offers associate and bachelor's degrees in English with emphases in Creative Writing, English Education, Literary Studies, and Professional and Technical Writing, as well as minors in Creative Writing, English Education, General Education, and Professional and Technical Writing. The English Department also offers a Masters of Arts in Technical Writing and Digital Rhetoric. Utah Tech is an open-enrollment institution, and the English department provides the university with traditional General Education composition courses as well as corequisite and developmental reading and writing courses designed to help at-risk students succeed. POSITION DETAILS, COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: Full-time (9-month) tenure-track faculty position. Faculty service begins August 2024, with pay and benefits starting July 1, 2024. Annual salary of $56,000 - $58,000 depending on qualifications & experience, with additional compensation available for optional summer/overload teaching. Responsibilities
- Teach 24 semester hours in lower division, upper division, and graduate-level English courses-including traditional composition, corequisite composition, and developmental reading and writing-as needed by the department.
- Teach lower division and upper division courses in Rhetoric and Composition.
- Lead the department's efforts to serve at-risk students, including teaching, developing curriculum, assessing, and serving as lead instructor of English 1000: Reading and Writing for Academic Success.
- Engage in scholarship relevant to the position at a level appropriate to a teaching university (both scholarship of discovery and scholarship of pedagogy are valued at UT).
- Assist in curriculum creation in Rhetoric and Composition.
- Serve on departmental, college, and university committees as assigned and attend departmental, college, and university meetings as required.
- Work with the department chair, the dean, and other faculty to advance the university's mission, including:
- Conduct student assessment.
- Hold regular office hours.
- Mentor part-time instructors.
- Perform service for the college and university.
- Participate in university and departmental student recruitment and retention initiatives.
- Facilitate service learning and engagement with the community.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Ph.D. or Ed.D. in English, Rhetoric and Composition (or related field) by August 2024 from a regionally accredited institution required.
- A demonstrated record of teaching, service, and scholarship in Rhetoric and Composition and working with at-risk students.
- Ability to employ various communication and teaching technologies.
- Ability to communicate clearly with students, staff and colleagues, both orally and in writing.
- An eagerness to engage with faculty, staff and administrators to develop ways to improve the educational experience of students.
