Job Summary
The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Office of Development and Alumni Relations (ODAR) engages, friends, alumni, corporations, and foundations who will support and promote the School's work of rigorous scientific research and educating the next generation of global health leaders to improve health and promote equity so all people can thrive.
This is a rare and exciting opportunity to work as a key partner to our new Dean of Faculty, Andrea Baccarelli and be the leader of a growing team of professionals. Reporting into the Dean of Faculty, and a crucial member of the Dean's leadership team, the Vice Dean is responsible for leading the ODAR team by setting the vision and strategy to inspire an expansion of high-quality engagement with alumni, donors, and key public health stakeholders to dramatically increase fundraising. The ODAR team is comprised of ~30 staff members, each of which serves in various development, communications and/or administrative/operations-related functions. The Vice Dean has four direct reports: an Executive Assistant and the Managing Directors of Development, Engagement and Strategy & Operations.

Position Description
Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Work with the Dean of the Faculty to shape the strategy and overall alumni engagement and fundraising objectives for the School
- With ODAR colleagues work with the Dean of the Faculty and the School's academic, financial, communications teams as well as volunteer leadership, to create an authentic culture of philanthropy across the School that will dramatically increase fundraised resources.
- Oversee and manage the functions of the office including Development, Engagement and Finance & Administration and Strategic Initiatives -- including the direct supervision of 4 full-time staff members (3 Managing Directors and an Executive Assistant) and indirect supervision of ~30 staff
- Craft and execute comprehensive fundraising strategies and plans to meet the annual and long-term fundraising objectives, with a focus on revenue that benefits the core mission of the School. One that has a particular focus on building a long-term sustainable revenue model that aligns with the research, capital and academic mission of the School
- With an entrepreneurial spirit conceptualize strategies and tactics for reaching out to non-traditional prospective donor constituencies, as well as create meaningful and effective engagement opportunities for alumni, donors, and friends of the School to build new and sustain existing philanthropic relationships.
- In partnership with Managing Directors, build and operationalize business systems that support ODAR staff; and ensure the overall operation is integrated and interfaces in a systematic way with academic units and leadership that can be leveraged across the University.
- Collaborate closely with the Office for Research Strategy & Development, Office for Technology & Development, Office of Sponsored Programs Administration, and the Office of Financial Services
- With the Dean and on their own establish and maintain a personal portfolio of transformational gift prospects
- Serve as a resource and partner with senior development leadership (University Development Office and the Council of Fundraising Deans) across the School and University to leverage opportunities for One Harvard transformational gifts.
- Develop relationships with key faculty and scientists, volunteers and administrative colleagues to identify and develop donor relationships.
- Other related duties as required.
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience required
- 15+ years of related experience, with progressively responsible experience in the development field, required
- Demonstrated success in fundraising and development
- Prior supervisory experience required
The following job-specific skills and competencies are preferred:
- Master's Degree
- Experience applying traditional development craft to a global and dynamic enterprise which is dependent on non-traditional philanthropic constituencies
- Comprehensive, collaborative, and quantitative results-driven approach to planning, building and managing diverse teams of development staff, faculty partners and volunteers
- Experience managing change, prioritizing and managing multiple complex activities in a time-sensitive environment, and meeting deadlines with attention to detail and quality
- Demonstrated good judgement, professional maturity and agility to foster alliances with internal and external constituencies
- Success in resource development, particularly at a senior level and in an academic or scientific research institution/organization
- Experience in strategic planning, and strong organizational and managerial skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills, and outstanding oral and written communications skills
- Awareness of and aptitude to appropriately and effectively understand, respect, and adapt to cultural and identity-based difference within group environments
- Knowledge of and commitment to concepts and issues tied to social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Skills related to creating and supporting an environment that allows for inclusion, effective intercultural engagement, and personal humility and authenticity
- Experience fostering and reinforcing an environment that values unique experiences, cultures, backgrounds, and goals
