Job Description

The University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Theatre seeks an innovative full-time Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Musical Direction to begin in August 2024 for its BFA Musical Theatre Program. Teaching responsibilities for the position will focus primarily on musical theatre performance and vocal coaching for musical theatre students, as well as serving as the resident musical director for two mainstage productions annually. This position will also accompany for selected musical theatre performance classes and will contribute to the growth of this dynamic and inventive program. Applicants with considerable professional experience and a background in teaching at the university level are strongly preferred. Must have advanced piano skills and experience in diverse styles of musical theatre.

Applicants should have demonstrated experience in an inclusive pedagogical philosophy and practice; the ability to collaborate as a member of an artistic team; novel approaches to contemporary practice in musical theatre; and excellent written and oral communication skills. Student recruiting, student advising and participation in various departmental, college, and university committees and activities is expected. Continuing professional activities and/or continued research in the discipline is also expected.

The BFA Musical Theatre program at The University of Alabama at Birmingham is a relatively young program that has shown continued success in training students from across the country to be innovative thinkers and artists in the contemporary musical theatre market. Fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST), the Department of Theatre at UAB is dedicated to developing the next generation of theatre artists by regularly producing world premiere productions, partnering with Tony-Award winning theatre companies, and hiring faculty and staff that are expected to continue working in the professional industry. In addition to the BFA Musical Theatre Program, the Department of Theatre offers students intensive studies in Design/Technology (BA Pre-Professional Concentration), Performance (BA Pre-Professional Concentration), and a General Theatre Studies (BA). The department consists of 13 fulltime faculty members and 4 fulltime professional production specialists. The department's production season includes five mainstage productions, studio productions, and four touring companies. Productions are built in professionally run studios and shops and performed in two state-of-the-art performance venues.

Required Qualifications

Terminal degree in Musical Theatre, Theatre or Music is required. Professional musical direction experience and advanced piano skills are required.
