The Vargas-Muñiz Lab in the Department of Biological Sciences at Virginia Tech seeks a full-time laboratory technician. The laboratory technician will assist with the development of cell and molecular biology tools for the white-nose syndrome fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans. The technician will also support existing projects related to the human pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus.
This full-time laboratory technician is responsible for the following: (i) assisting with the day-to-day operation of the lab; (ii) preparing media and solutions; (iii) ordering research supplies; (iv) generation and maintenance of fungal strain; (v) assist with grant and manuscript writing, and (vi) collaborating with an interdisciplinary research team. Candidates should submit a cover letter addressing how they meet the required and preferred qualifications described below, a resume/CV detailing relevant work experience, and a list of three references with their contact information. This position is for at least two years, contingent upon satisfactory annual reviews. The position will remain open until filled.
- BA or BS degree in biology, molecular biology, microbiology, or a related field.
- Must have excellent teamwork and collaborative skills to work effectively within a distributed team
- Experience with the preparation of solutions and media
- Enthusiasm and curiosity for science
- Excellent and demonstrated organizational and efficient time management skills
- Excellent communication skills, including verbal, written, and graphical communication skills
- Previous laboratory experience
- Previous background or interest in fungal biology
- Experience working in a highly interdisciplinary collaborative team
- Experience doing molecular biology work
