Description

The Department of Music invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Music position to begin in August 2024. The successful candidate will direct the Simpson College Jazz Ensemble, provide instruction in their applied area, and teach general music courses.

 DUTIES: direct the Simpson College Jazz Ensemble; offer individual instruction to majors and non-majors in the candidate’s applied area; a jazz methods course for music education majors; coach instrumental chamber music (including jazz combo), and teach other courses as assigned such as jazz history, popular music, or general education courses in music. This position also entails administering annually a well-established two-day high school jazz band competition in January as well as a regionally acclaimed week-long jazz combo camp in June.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS: Doctorate or commensurate experience; demonstrated experience leading jazz ensembles and teaching in an applied area.

 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrated success in leading college/university or secondary jazz ensembles and combos; knowledge of college-level repertoire in the candidate’s applied area; experience teaching instrumental methods coursework; record of excellence in teaching general education courses in music at the college level; significant ability as a performer in both the jazz and classical realms; ability to network with music educators and performers; ability to recruit instrumentalists.
