Job Summary
The Sustainability Project Manager will focus on planning and project management for several priorities in the University-wide Sustainability Action Plan, including but not limited to energy systems, the built environment, governance, and procurement. The Project Manager will staff key stakeholder groups including the faculty-led Presidential Committee on Sustainability (PCS) and the Sustainability Management Council (SMC), which comprises senior operations/facilities leaders. They will also develop actionable guidance for Schools and business units. To accomplish this, they will develop and execute comprehensive project plans, propose innovative ideas, develop educational resources, and strengthen relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
Position DescriptionManage stakeholder groups that include senior and junior staff from all of Harvard's Schools and business units, facilitating and assisting them in effectively making progress toward Harvard's voluntary and regulatory sustainability goals.
- Plan, prepare for, and manage senior-level Sustainability Management Council (SMC) meetings, agendas, and communications together with the OFS Senior Team.
- Convene and manage subgroups that bring together facilities and operations teams on specific topic areas and clearly articulate goals, progress, and outcomes to advance shared work and shared outcomes.
- Support the development of actionable tools and educational resources (e.g., case studies, best practice guides, and convenings) to share information quickly and efficiently across Harvard Schools and units, and with vendors and partners.
- Support the OFS team in engaging, informing, and partnering with Campus Services groups and facilities/operations teams across the University.
Project-manage other governance groups, including the Presidential Committee on Sustainability (PCS) and related work products.
- Prepare clear workplans, timelines, agendas and materials.
- Prepare initial drafts of briefing materials and communications to support programmatic needs.
Project-manage implementation efforts related to the Sustainability Action Plan, including driving updates to Operational Sustainability Standards (e.g., landscaping, cleaning) and creating clear guidance and educational materials for Schools/units to meet those Standards and priorities.
Perform administrative duties necessary to fulfill above responsibilities.
- Manage project budgets, timelines, deliverables, and reporting.
- Contribute to OFS event planning and storytelling.
- Manage student interns, part-time employees, and/or consultants, as needed.
Perform other duties and work on special projects, as needed.
Basic Qualifications- Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience is required.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in project management, project plan development and implementation, and stakeholder engagement
Additional Qualifications:
- Demonstrated experience and familiarity with energy systems and/or sustainable building design and systems.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of sustainability industry trends
- Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity, equity and contributing to an inclusive work and learning environment
- Excellent relationship-building and interpersonal skills; comfort and ability to engage and build coalitions with diverse audiences
- Excellent communication, writing, and presentation skills for a variety of audiences
- Proven ability to think critically and solve problems
- High degree of flexibility, adaptability, and general ability to work within in a constantly changing environment
- Proven ability to conduct research and analysis on various topics and produce reliable metrics and data
Technology Skills Required:
- Extensive experience with MS PowerPoint, Excel, and Word.
- An ability to learn Harvard systems and web software quickly is a requirement.
- Proficiency in Photoshop or other design software is a plus.

Work Format DetailsThis is a hybrid position that is based in Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
