This position serves as the Technical Director for the Theatre Department’s major productions at the Center for the Arts, teaches Stagecraft and Freshman Applied Theatre each semester, and works with the Center’s Director of Operations to complete projects at the Center.

Essential Duties

  1. Responsible for scenic construction (scenery, painting, and props) for Theatre’s main stage productions and supervision of student builders/crews, ensuring that all technical needs are met and safety guidelines are followed in each production space.
  2. Collaborate with the Production Manager on developing build schedules, estimating production expenses and identifying student labor needs.
  3. Purchase construction materials.
  4. Draft technical drawings.
  5. Oversee production rigging.
  6. Transfer set pieces from the shop to the performance venue and mount the scenery onstage.
  7. Coordinate production strikes.
  8. Maintain shop equipment, supplies and inventories.
  9. Work with the Director of Operations to oversee the completion of projects.
  10. Teach Stagecraft, supervise Freshman Applied Theatre and Scenic Applied students each semester.
  11. Assist the Center’s Director of Operations with daily operations, maintenance, and event set-ups as needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to follow institutional protocol in procuring materials while exercising fiscal and budgeting efficiency.

Excellent carpentry skills while utilizing safe and proficient use of tools and equipment.

Strong organizational skills to oversee multiple projects simultaneously.

Ability to effectively communicate ideas verbally, orally, and graphically.

Must possess acumen to teach and mentor students.

Technical expertise in the fields of scenery, lighting and sound for theatre productions.

Ability to maintain a flexible working schedule to accommodate event schedules.

Education and Experience

The educational requirement for this position is: Bachelor’s degree in Theatre with an emphasis in theatre design/technology or related field and 3-5 years of relevant experience;

Education substituted for experience? Yes

Preferred qualifications: BFA or MFA in Technical Production or other related field with teaching and/or professional experience in theatrical Technical Direction, or related area, and demonstrated experience.

OSHA 10 certification, preferred.

This position requires: teaching and/or professional experience in theatrical Technical Production, or related area, and demonstrated experience working with diverse students and staff of varying skill sets.
