Description 

The WV Clinical & Translational Science Institute (WVCTSI) at West Virginia University Research Corporation is seeking applications for a hybrid Assistant Director for the Professional Development Core.

About the Opportunity

The Assistant Director for the Professional Development (PD) Core reports to the PD Core Co-Directors and is responsible for development and management of programs and services that support investigator development for the members in the West Virginia Clinical and Translational Science Institute (WVCTSI). The PD Core Assistant Director provides expertise and guidance on investigator development to all members of the WVCTSI (including students, staff and faculty) on the numerous programs and services offered by the PD Core; these programs include the Research Scholars Program, the Mentorship Training Program (serving as an Associate Director), Females Advancing Research in Clinical and Translational Science (FACTS) Group, the Summer INTRO Program (serving as an Assistant Director) and new programs/services as they arise. The PD Core Assistant Director will also coordinate with all other ongoing PD Core programs, including Proposal Development Services, Editorial Services for Publications, the National CTR Professional Development Group meetings, among others. The PD Core Assistant Director ensures that all programs and services are provided in a high quality, efficient and timely manner, including good stewardship of resources. Cross collaboration with all WVCSTI Cores and funded grant activities, including supervision of staff assisting with programmatic and service offerings, is also required.

What you'll do:

  • Develop and manage integrated programs and project plans for professional development of investigators (e.g., investigator development services) n accordance with programmatic goals, respond to changing landscape with adapted implementation strategies, in consultation with Professional Development (PD) Co-Directors. Collaborates with PD Core Co-Directors to sustain, promote, and grow core programs and services to support investigator development.
  • Responsible for preparing status reports on project/program plans, progress and results of activities, including coordination of quarterly and annual required reports. Monitor, evaluate, or record training activities and evaluate program impact and effectiveness for all PD Core activities and program. 
  • Identify and communicate with presenters and lecturers to coordinate scheduling of seminars, workshops, and courses offered by the PD Core.
  • Establish and maintain an active network of professional contacts for the purposes of this position both internal and external to the academic institution.
  • Collaborate with institutional-wide professional development and research showcase events to highlight and promote WVCTSI services and resources for investigators, faculty, staff and students. 
  • Oversee evaluation and assessment of training needs through surveys, interviews, focus groups, or consultations, including coordination with Evaluation and Tracking core personnel as warranted.
  • Obtain, organize, or develop training procedure manuals, guides, or course materials such as handouts or visual aids, and development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as requested.
  • Serve as a representative of the PD Core on WVCTSI Committees as requested.
  • Serve as a representative of the PD Core to Partner sites as needed. 
  • Represent the PD Core and provide posters or other presentations as invited a local and national venues, including national CTR-related meetings.
  • Supervise PD Core staff and provide guidance to support staff on work assignments.
  • Act as a proxy for the PD Core Co-Director(s), as requested or in their absence.
  • Manage the prioritization of workload and special projects of the PD Core.
  • Maintain a full understanding of all PD Core programs, including programs and services not directly participating in, including Fellows Research Academy (FRA), Proposal Development grant writing groups, Principal Investigator Academy, Project ECHO, WV Practice-Based Research Network (WVPBRN), clinical trials trainings, etc. and other new funded projects which may serve investigator development. 
  • Develop and monitor budget in collaboration with PD Core Co-Directors.
  • Develop policies and procedures to ensure efficient operation of the PD Core.
  • Work with PD Core Co-Directors, providing leadership for the WVCTSI Research Scholar Program, including participation in recruitment, selection, appointments, assessment of budgets, monitoring of participant progress, programming content, logistical support for activities, and providing investigator development services support and guidance to participants.
  • Develop marketing and recruitment tools with communications staff for all CTS academic and PD Core programs and services. 
  • Provide web-based presentation materials and host workshops and training presented remotely via video teleconferencing. 
  • Develop and provide presentations to facilitate recruitment of participants in the WVCTSI educational programs and services.
  • Plan and attend meetings, seminars, symposia and other events related to investigator development and WVCTSI program efforts.
  • In collaboration with PD Core Co-Directors, orientate new faculty, staff, and students to the WVCTSI and its services.
  • Serve as the Associate Program Director of the WVCTSI Mentorship Training Program (MTP) working with the MTP Co-Directors to set strategic goals, objectives, developing programs, developing training schedules, facilitating planning of yearly offerings and oversee evaluation of all training activities, including supervision of a MTP Coordinator as hired. 
  • As Associate MTP Director, serve as a trained facilitator to provide mentorship training instruction for programs on an annual basis.
  • Provide guidance and coordination of the FACTS (Females Advancing Clinical and Translational Science) Steering Committee and the planning of yearly offerings of PD activities targeting women in science, including supervision of PD Coordinator with implementation of activities.
  • Serve as the Assistant Director of the Summer Introduction to Research Opportunity (INTRO) Program and work with the INTRO Program Director to recruit of faculty mentors, development of program curriculum, develop program materials, and provide supervision of the INTRO coordinator.
  • Assist PD Core Co-Directors with logistical and programmatic support of National CTR Professional Development leadership group monthly meetings.
  • Provide oversight and supervision of PD Core coordinator for academic programs and educational offerings, including graduate level CTS PhD, MS and Certificate degree programs at West Virginia University, including knowledge of the current policies, procedures, and requirements for academic programs in the graduate division.
  • Advise mentors and mentees in troubleshooting challenges related to mentoring and educational programs.
  • Work with other WVCTSI cores and programs to identify synergies and maximize areas of collaboration.
  • Provide leadership to WVCTSI staff in development and launch of investigator navigation services.


Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in business or health related field, or an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience. Master's degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of professional development and academic program leadership experience, or an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, including a demonstrated ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups or individuals.
  • Ability in problem identification and reasoning; ability to develop original ideas to solve problems, persuasion, and leadership experience.
  • Excellent program administration or project management experience preferred with exceptional organizational and time management skills.
  • Must have knowledge of program management principles, practices, techniques and tools to ensure efficiency.
  • Maintains skills in, or knowledge of, professional principles, legal and/or reporting requirements affecting area of responsibility.
