The department of Information Technology Services at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a Network Engineer.

About the Opportunity

The Network Engineer takes a lead role in providing advanced technical support, overseeing network operations, and leading projects related to the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of an organization's network infrastructure. This position requires a strong technical background, extensive experience, and the ability to guide and mentor junior technicians.

What You'll Do

  • Network Infrastructure Management:  Lead the installation, configuration, and maintenance of complex network hardware and software components, including routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless systems.  Oversee the setup and maintenance of local area networks (LANs) and wide area networks (WANs).
  • Network Troubleshooting and Resolution:  Diagnose and resolve advanced network issues, utilizing in-depth knowledge of network protocols, routing, and switching.  Investigate and resolve complex connectivity, performance, and security incidents.
  • Network Monitoring and Optimization:  Utilize advanced network monitoring tools to ensure network performance, reliability, and security.  Analyze network traffic patterns and implement Quality of Service (QoS) policies to optimize data flow.
  • Project Leadership:  Lead network-related projects, such as network upgrades, migrations, and new technology implementations.  Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define project scopes, timelines, and requirements.
  • Mentoring and Guidance:  Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior network technicians, sharing knowledge and best practices.  Assist in the development of junior technicians' skills and expertise.
  • Network Documentation and Standards:  Maintain comprehensive network documentation, including diagrams, configurations, and standard operating procedures.  Develop and enforce network standards, ensuring consistency and compliance.
  • Security and Compliance:  Implement advanced network security measures, including firewall configurations, intrusion detection systems, and access controls.  Stay updated with security trends and best practices to address evolving threats.
  • Change Management:  Plan and execute network changes, upgrades, and patches while minimizing disruption to users and services.  Document and communicate all changes through the WVU Change Management Process. 


Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent combination of training, education, and experience in a relevant field
  • A minimum of four (4) years of combined experience involving:
    • Configuration and installation of Routers, Switches, Unified Communications, Wireless Access Points, and Firewalls
    • Experience in Internet TCP/IP protocols such as DHCP, DNS, SNMP, TELNET, FTP, WWW, SSH
    • Design and implementation of complex and secure LANs/WANs.
  • Substantial experience in network operations, with a proven track record of progressively responsible roles.
  • Proficiency in advanced network protocols and technologies (BGP, OSPF, etc).
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to analyze and resolve complex network issues.
  • Expertise in network security principles, including firewalls, VPNs, and intrusion detection systems.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills for project management and team collaboration.
  • Ability to mentor and guide junior technicians, fostering their professional growth.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Adaptability to changing technologies and a willingness to continuously learn.
