Job Summary
Responsible for leadership and ongoing enhancement of the University's Institutional Risk Management (IRM) program, for the advancement of risk management and compliance practices across the institution, establishment and maintenance of a university policy office and oversight of the institutional anonymous reporting hotline.  Coordinates the University Risk Management Committee (URMC) activities and meetings.

Position Description
Financial Administration (FAD) is dedicated to advancing Harvard University's teaching and research mission by stewarding its resources; providing support, guidance, and consultation; ensuring compliance with University and federal guidelines; mitigating risk; pursuing operational excellence; and promoting the financial health of the University. 

Risk Management and Audit Services (RMAS) is a department within Harvard University's Financial Administration that assists University management in identifying, managing, and mitigating risk by providing the following services: Financial, Operational, Compliance and Construction and Information Technology Audit, Enterprise Risk Management, Risk Strategy and Insurance, and Administration of the Anonymous Reporting Hotline.

Institutional Risk Management (IRM)
  • Develops strategies to provide visibility to inherent and emerging risks and embed risk management principles into decision making processes;
  • Advances the maturity of the IRM program;
  • Enhances the knowledge and awareness of the community on IRM through the coordination and hosting of an annual risk symposium and delivery of targeted training;
  • Designs and coordinates university-wide risk assessments;
  • Provides advisory and consulting services to school and central risk committees;
  • Works with risk owners and champions on risk mitigation efforts, status updates and develops a reporting process to monitor status;
  • Identifies opportunities for reducing institutional exposure in high risk areas;
  • In collaboration with the URMC Chair(s), organizes, develops agendas, prepares presenters and orients new members to the committee;
  • Coordinates and/or participates on committees to consult on business risks associated with new business processes, new regulations or other change management events;
  • Prepares and presents reports for the URMC and Joint Committee on Inspection on institutional risks and hotline activity.
Policy Governance
  • Establishes and maintains a University-wide framework and governance process for the review, update and approval of university-wide policy;
  • Acts as a senior level representative (Secretary) of the Policy Executive Committee; and
  • Manages the university policy officer / office.
Institutional Compliance
  • Develops and maintains a compliance universe and, in conjunction with key stakeholders and compliance owners, performs gap assessments using a risk-based approach;
  • Contributes to the development and implementation of compliance policies and procedures, training programs and self-assessment programs.
Anonymous Reporting Hotline
  • Oversees the operation of the University Hotline and works with appropriate institutional leadership to respond to issues arising;
  • Develops marketing tools to publicize the purpose and nature of the Hot Line and to educate the community about it.
RMAS Leadership
  • Participates as member of the RMAS leadership team in the review and evaluation of audit and consulting engagements and related documents;
  • Develops and embeds integrated risk management practices across RMAS functional areas.
Basic Qualifications
  • Master's degree or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum of 10 years' relevant work experience
  • Supervisory experience
Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Risk management, audit or compliance certification preferred.
  • Experience in a University or not-for-profit setting and additional educational credentials may enhance candidacy.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, and ability to present complex issues to senior management.

Working Conditions

FAD actively supports hybrid work where business needs allow. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CT, MA, ME, NH, NJ, NY, RI, and VT). This position will be hybrid requiring 1-2 days a week onsite.

Additional travel to campus may be necessary based on business needs and the nature of work. Examples include bi-annual or quarterly Town Halls, critical business meetings or other work events. Advance notice will be provided. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process.
