Position Description
This position will report to the Associate Director of Accounting of the Harvard Medical School, and will manage a staff of three. This position manages the month and year-end closing processes, ensuring accuracy, completeness, reasonable documentation, and ongoing identification of areas for improvement. Assesses school and department-level internal controls, considers University standards/best practices, and implements and operationalizes control improvements. Develops and/or enhances, implements, and oversees compliance with other school and University-level accounting/financial policies and procedures.
This role requires both a strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work collaboratively with finance staff (with varying degrees of accounting experience or knowledge of processes and procedures) across all parts of Harvard Medical School and Harvard University.

Due to the needs and demands of our business during year-end and financial deliverables, vacation requests between mid-June and mid-August will not generally be approved. Outside of this time period, vacation time must be requested well in advance and there maybe be times when an employee's request may be denied due to operational necessity within our unit.
This position is based in Boston and some in-person on-campus work will be required, and flexible/remote work is an option. Any remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA*, CT, GA, IL, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, RI, VA, VT, and WA). Individual flexible and remote work options for this role will be discussed during the interview process. *Note: Harvard employees working in California must be exempt.

Position Description

Job Specific Responsibilities:
- Manage the month and year-end closing processes, ensuring timeliness, accuracy, and completeness of transactions. Ensure completeness of all tasks on the closing checklist, and meet regularly with team members to review the completeness of deliverables, including Central quarterly reconciliation and reporting requirements.
- Maintain a strong internal control environment by ensuring compliance with university policy and procedures, including review, analysis, revision, and documentation of policies and procedures.
- Responsible for effective staff management, including hiring and orientation, training and development, workflow and performance management, and the promotion of an inclusive and innovative work environment. Provides mentoring to the team and identifies professional development opportunities.
- Perform complex analyses relating to the University's quarterly checklist, including year-over-year balance sheet variances.
- Review journal entries to record or adjust accounting transactions in accordance with GAAP, HMS, and university policies. Ensure financial compliance with University policies and procedures, audit and accounting disclosure requirements, and applicable legal rules and regulations.
- Preparation of Affiliate tubs Federal Form 990 tax returns and Massachusetts form PC.
- Collaborate on the development of new accounting procedures within HMS that support University-wide policies and initiatives.
- Ensures that customer questions/problems are responded to and resolved in an expeditious manner to deliver excellent customer service.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or equivalent work experience required
- Minimum of 7 years' relevant work experience
- Supervisory experience
- Experience using general ledger and financial systems
- Must have strong analytical, problem-solving, and customer problem-resolution skills
- Need to be able to work with administrators across multiple HMS departments, with varying knowledge of finance and accounting
- Must have a take-charge ability and excellent judgment in determining and leveraging resources
- Must have the ability to work effectively in teams, independently, and with other operating managers
- Be able to communicate with finesse and diplomacy
- Building partnerships across HMS and HU is critical to success
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, advanced Excel skills
- Advanced knowledge of accounting principles
- Demonstrated experience with financial systems and data query tool
- CPA Preferred
