DevOps Engineer II
Job Description
The successful candidate will work as a member of the Division of Technology Development and Deployment to create, deploy, and support research applications and associated infrastructure. They will be expected to apply a cross-functional skillset to write software, develop and maintain the platforms, frameworks, and systems that allows VTTI to deploy and run software more efficiently and more securely. Candidate will utilize DevOps best practices on project and software development and operations to ensure that our systems are being continuously improved, can be maintained efficiently, and can incorporate changes quickly. Participation in cross-training of systems at VTTI to ensure that information is effectively shared will be required.
Applicant must be able to work independently and as part of a team to develop and maintain web applications (full stack) that enable research data collection and analysis, with a particular focus on front-end web development and a common API to be used by developers across VTTI. Additionally providing maintenance and long-term assistance to ensure applications, subsystems, and infrastructure function together to ensure business needs are met. Performance at this level requires developmental experience in a professional position or equivalent graduate level educations.
Other Responsibilities: Improve and maintain existing web applications by working with users to meet project objectives. Independently evaluate, select and apply software design principles, procedures, and criteria, using judgment in making adaptations and modifications.
Directions given and received: Independently perform most assignments with instructions on global objectives and general results expected. May supervise/mentor/provide training and coordinate the work of graduate research assistants, technicians, and others who assist in specific assignments.
Required Qualifications
- M.S. degree in Computer Science or engineering comparable with exception for a lesser degree with significant related professional experience
- Proficient in backend, server-side development using languages such as Java, C#, and Python.
- Proficient in client-side development using languages such as JavaScript/TypeScript using a variety of frameworks like React
- Familiarity with relational database technologies and SQL
- Experience interfacing various applications via APIs
- Experience working with product owners to develop requirements
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with React
- Experience with Next.js
- Experience using GitLab and CI/CD pipelines
- Experience with end-to-end testing frameworks like Playwright
- Experience with containerization technologies (Docker/containerd)
- Experience with Kubernetes
- Experience with OpenAPI Specification and REST and/or GraphQL API technologies
