PLEASE NOTE: The starting salary placement depends on qualifications and experience and is anticipated to be in the range of $100,000.00 per year to $120,000.00 per year.
This position is a Management Personnel Plan (MPP) position in the CSU, and serves at the pleasure of the President.

About the Position
The Director of Social Justice Education/Deputy Diversity Officer will provide much-needed capacity to develop and deliver a portfolio of research-informed diversity, inclusion and equity-based professional development initiatives for faculty, staff, and students on our campus. This position will also provide the continual training needed to maintain Cal State East Bay's organizational capacity to integrate DEI (Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion) based thinking and practices into our everyday work. Additionally, this position serves as a Deputy Diversity Officer, providing support and assistance in consultations and in leadership roles as assigned by the University Diversity Officer. This role has broad responsibility for planning, organizing and prioritizing work and will work with the University Diversity Officer on longer term goals and policy issues.
I. Develop and implement research informed and tailored professional development training initiatives on diversity, inclusion, and equity to build organizational capacity for inclusive excellence and a climate for diversity, equity, and inclusion for students, staff, faculty, and administrators:
- Assess training and development needs on DEI through consultation with employee groups and managers in various campus units and divisions.
- Write tailored professional development curriculum responsive to needs assessment.
- Implement training curriculum for:
- DEI training for staff that supports their work with students, colleagues, and community members.
- DEI training for faculty that supports their teaching, mentoring, and research, scholarship, and creative activities.
- DEI training on microaggressions.
- Develop and implement diversity, inclusion and intergroup understanding programming for students.
- Do outreach to engage and develop campus and local partnerships to sustain and support the above initiatives.
II. Under the supervision and direction of the University Diversity Officer (UDO), provide consultation services and serve in specific DEI-related leadership assignments
III. Supervise student employees including graduate students who may assist in conducting research, assessment, facilitation and training, administrative support, and in some cases, language interpretation for workshops.
IV. Under the supervision of the UDO, consult and coordinate with Title IX, DHR, and Human Resources in instances where DEI training or consultation requests indicate potentially needed documentation, exploration, and intervention according to collective bargaining agreements, policies, regulations, or laws.
V. Work under the supervision of the University Diversity Officer on other duties as assigned with various diversity and inclusion initiatives.
VI. Other Duties as assigned.
- A Master's degree in social psychology, sociology, communication studies, higher education leadership, human resources or other related fields.
- Must have (2) two years of experience in diversity, equity, and inclusion professional development and training on pedagogy for faculty in higher education.
- Must have (2) two years of experience in diversity, equity, and inclusion professional development and training for staff in higher education.
- At least some experience with diversity, equity, and inclusion professional development and training that is specific to STEM faculty and health sciences faculty.
- Must have command of knowledge, literacy, and articulateness about diversity, equity, and inclusion issues that are found at a large diverse public university like Cal State East Bay.
- Must be able to discuss the theoretical frameworks that underpin diversity, equity, and inclusion training and professional development and be able to write professional development curricula tailored to these frameworks for specific units and programs.
- Must be able to demonstrate understanding of the breadth and depth of diversity including and beyond race/ethnicity specific to the intersectional identities salient to our region.
- Must have some general understanding of the laws, policies and processes of Title IX, Discrimination, Harassment, and Retaliation, and Collective-Bargaining grievance and disciplinary actions take precedence over DEI work.
- Three (3) years of progressively responsible management experience, including supervision of professional staff.
- Working knowledge of intergroup dialogue or dialogic practices or restorative justice using theoretical and applied frameworks for implementing and innovating curriculum for intergroup dialogue-based programming and other dialogue contexts.
- Knowledge, skills, and potential to launch and mature a campus-based dialogue facilitation or restorative justice-informed initiative for students, faculty, staff, and local community based in research informed work.
- Ability to apply consultative skills to determine professional development needs on diversity, inclusion, and equity for different employee groups and student organizations and campus communities at large.
- Ability to write training and professional development curriculum that is current and reflective of current and relevant research and practices in the area of anti-bias training, inclusive classroom pedagogy, inclusive leadership, social justice education, and systemic equity.
- Ability to implement, facilitate, oversee a comprehensive diversity, inclusion, and equity based professional development portfolio that reflects Cal State East Bay's goals of inclusive excellence in support of closing the achievement gap of Underrepresented Minority (URM) Student Success and improving faculty and staff diversity and equity.
- Ability to apply consultative skills and develop curriculum as stated above in the context of intervention initiatives at the request of organizational leaders (heads of academic departments, deans, Vice Presidents, etc.)
- Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with a wide range of campus community stakeholders from administrators to staff, faculty, and students across disciplines and responsibilities.
- Ability to work in coordination with other staff within the Diversity Office and other offices to plan logistics, participant recruitment, and materials at a high volume given the size of the campus and limited human, budgetary resources, policy constraints, collective bargaining agreements, and external issues.
- Ability to grow a comprehensive portfolio of professional development modules on diversity, inclusion, and equity that is sustainable through train-the-trainers initiatives and partnerships across campus.
- Ability to work under pressure and situations of conflict involving diversity, discrimination, and equity at a large public institution that is very diverse in terms of race/ethnicity, class, gender, sexual orientation, sexual expression, religion, age, immigrant status, veteran and military status, disability and mental health status.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees, students, applicants and external agencies.
Preferred Skills and Knowledge
- Ph.D./Ed.D. in social psychology, sociology, communication studies, higher education leadership, human resources or other related field.
- At least some experience in working with faculty on diversity and inclusion professional development and training that supports their research, scholarship and creative activities.
- At least some experience working with and understanding of diversity and dynamics of exclusion specific to different employee groups at a large institution.
- At least some experience in developing dialogue facilitation or restorative justice facilitation at a higher ed institution for students, staff, or faculty.
- Experience working on or facilitating disability justice issues within a framework of DEI work.
The physical demands of this position are of a general typical office work requiring time spent sitting or standing at computer/laptop station, light lifting of training materials (copies and handouts), and some standing for presentations, and walking across campus to various offices and meeting rooms. The noise level is typical of most offices with a moderate level of noise.
