Human Resource Services invites applications for a Benefits Associate II to join our team as we partner with the University of Montana (UM) community and affiliated campuses to provide solutions and services to support the success of the UM mission.

The work you will do is rewarding and has a positive and lasting effect on our UM colleagues. You will have the opportunity to:

  • Provide specialized and in-depth information and assistance regarding insurance benefits, retirement, medically related leave usage, and wellness, including counseling on related options.
  • Provide exit counseling for separating employees, including assistance to retirees.
  • Research and find solutions to correct issues and discrepancies.
  • Coordinate and work at events related to areas of responsibility.
  • Provide individual and group training.

In this position you will use your analytical skills when reviewing information and requests in the form of data, collective bargaining agreements, legislation, policies, and procedures, which will inform your ability to provide effective answers; problem-solve solutions; provide exceptional service to a wide variety of individuals; and cultivate a career path by developing new and growing current knowledge, skills and abilities. Additionally, you will build an understanding of all areas of HRS; as well as the culture and needs of the individuals who work at the University of Montana and our sister campuses in Butte, Dillon and Helena.

Required Skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of individuals and groups with diverse backgrounds at all levels both on and off campus, including ability to communicate complex information in an easily understandable way
  • Experience providing specialized and in-depth information regarding and assistance with, including but not limited to; insurance benefits, retirement, medically related leave usage, and wellness, as well as providing counseling on related options
  • Ability and experience providing new hire and exit benefits counseling for separating employees, including assistance to retirees
  • Experience and ability to provide exceptional customer service, maintain positive composure when serving angry customers; and outstanding conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive, trust-based relationships with departmental representatives and team members
  • Ability to use, or learn to use, integrated information system, benefits software, word processing, spreadsheet, email, and database software, including any new software that may be required to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position
  • Ability to, perform accurate, timely data entry and to pay attention to detail in order to achieve the highest level of accuracy
  • Organizational, multi-tasking, and time management skills; with the ability to effectively prioritize workloads
  • Sound judgment, problem solving skills and trouble-shooting skills; with the ability to analyze information and determine an appropriate course of action
  • Must be able to address ambiguous situations and information in a positive, open, and thoughtful way
  • Ability to maintain a consistently professional, personable demeanor
  • Ability to maintain complete confidentially with all issues discussed and handled in the HRS office
  • Ability and desire to learn, grow, and develop work knowledge, skills and abilities
  • Ability to create presentation/ promotional materials and handouts
  • Experience with; and knowledge and understanding of HIPAA
Minimum Required Experience
  • High School diploma and three (3) years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience in similar position related to benefits coordination and administration
  • Additional experience in a Human Resources office is a plus

Position Details

Position Title:              Benefits Associate II

Position Number:        013460

Department:                 Human Resource Services

Work Schedule:           Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week),

                                      Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, 12 months/year

Salary:                          $17.681/hr - $22.101/hr 

                                      Rate of pay determined by staff compensation structure.

                                      Position may be hired as a Level I ($14.19 /hr - $17.737/hr) or

                                      Level II based on experience and qualifications; 

                     and advancement to a Level II would be expected within 6 months to 1 year. 

Union Affiliation:         None

Probationary Period:  Six months minimum

Benefits Include:           Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan,

                                      partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.
