Research Assistant
Job Description
The Food Analysis Laboratory Control Center (FALCC) in the Virginia Tech Department of Biochemistry seeks a qualified individual to join the lab team, to assist with the preparation of food samples for analysis of nutrient composition, compiling data, performing statistical analysis and preparing graphics for manuscripts if needed. Procure food samples and lab supplies as needed, ship samples to other labs, and eventually lead sample inventory organization/ management. Opportunity to potentially expand job duties depending on competencies and future lab needs and funding.
Required Qualifications
Experience working in an analytical chemistry or similar laboratory; Competence with Microsoft Office and the use of Access for data management and basic reports, queries, and data analyses; Detail oriented with the ability to follow SOPs; Ability to work independently; Ability to multi-task, problem solve, and adapt to changing priorities; Strong planning, organizational and interpersonal skills; Strong oral/written English communication skills; Must be able to work with all types of foods, including but not limited to dairy, milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, and soy.
Preferred Qualifications
B.S. or M.S. degree or equivalent in Food Science and Technology, Human Nutrition and Foods, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related field with equivalent training and experience; Experience with sample tracking database systems and inventory management. Experience with administrative support; Experience with Excel data analytics.
