The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, VA invites applications to fill two tenure-track appointments at the rank of Assistant Professor (applications for Associate Professor and/or Full Professor may also be considered) starting January 1, 2024, or August 1, 2024. A Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline is required, and post-doctoral experience is preferred. Applicants must have a strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching. Preference will be given to candidates who have a background in civil engineering materials, construction management, surveying, soil mechanics, and/or transportation. All positions require the ability to help the department teach some basic mechanics courses (statics, solid mechanics, dynamics, and/or fluid mechanics) and upper-level CEE elective courses.

Job Duties

  • Teach a variety of basic engineering and upper-level courses (typically a 3-3 load).
  • Advise and supervise students.
  • Engage in scholarship and potentially teach undergraduate labs.
  • Perform in four domains: teaching, scholarly engagement, professional citizenship, and cadet (student) development.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or closely related field.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Must have a strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, administrative staff, and cadets (students) in a higher education environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, accuracy, and ability to follow through independently.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills (oral, written, listening).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with ABET accreditation.
  • EIT or PE registration. PE registration is required for tenure and promotion to Associate Professor.
  • Prior experience facilitating independent research and/or service projects with students.
  • Candidates must demonstrate ability to conduct research, publish, and present scholarly work consistent with their field of expertise.
