Director, Advising and Career Communities

Leads Greene Center’s career advising and communities initiatives, services and programs for undergraduate, graduate students and young alumni. Serves a strategic role in establishing relationships with students and key partners on campus. Leads efforts and strategy around career community development – opportunities for students to engage with alumni, parents, volunteers, employers, faculty members who represent the various industries and professions. Encourages engagement in the career education process. Lead efforts to highlight competencies sought after by employers in various industries and share with students and faculty. Cultivates and leverages various on-campus partners to increase self-knowledge, efficacy, and exploration, providing the skills and tools to prepare students for experiential opportunities – such as internships, research, and community involvement. Strategically engage partners in efforts to connect students to network of professions.
- Directly supervises, hires, trains, evaluates and provides work direction and problem-solving assistance for staff members. Indirectly supervise and coach graduate and student assistants on advising.
- Consults and effectively collaborates regularly with office staff to share student and other relevant information and to create/implement services and programs that anticipate or respond to changing economic and labor condition and industry trends.
- Engages advising staff, program managers, and graduate interns in determining appropriate student advising load, assessing existing services and programs offered to students and employers, and identifying new services.
- Leads and directs several major office-wide administrative functions.
- Provides support and assistance in setting performance goals, reaching goals, and engaging in self-appraisal. Conduct annual appraisals of team.
- Encourages staff development and growth. Showcase and encourage successful staff effort at the campus, local, regional, and national levels.
- Continually improves and seek professional development opportunities/feedback on supervision style and approaches to better enhance staff development, morale, and cohesion
- Helps set the strategic vision for advising and career communities; lead staff in developing and implementing shared strategic priorities; monitor and report progress toward strategic goals and objectives.
- Creates career advising philosophy and protocols. Provide career advising policy recommendations.
- Researches career development trends and provide comparative and benchmark information to place office achievements in context. Utilize assessment information to modify programs and services. Regularly measure outcomes of student programs and services and report results to stakeholders.
- Helps determine allocation of department operating budget targeting student advising and programming.
- Assists in the management of office operations and in representing career services to the campus community.
Relationship Development & Management
- Builds and strengthen relationships with external and internal stakeholders, including faculty/staff, employers, and other campus units.
- Coordinates efforts with campus offices to ensure efficient relationship management and coordination of student services. Collaborate with Alumni Relations to coordinate career service offerings for alumni.
- Consults and effectively collaborate regularly with staff to share student, industry, employer, and other relevant information and to create/implement services and programs that anticipate or respond to trends in the preparation, recruiting and hiring of students.
- Regularly conducts gap analysis of student engagement and Career Center offerings based on benchmark data and create reports outlining strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats and improvement plans; implement initiatives to address any potential gaps.
- Serves as liaison to designated academic departments and university departments to assess and meet the needs of our academic stakeholders and to promote collaboration across departments and majors by focusing on exploratory programming.
- Lead career education Handler scholarship team member and facilitate one-credit fall course
- Works with key stakeholders to create career/industry and employment specific events and workshops that facilitate student learning and skill development to educate and prepare students for the future of work.
- Prepares and deliver presentations for various campus stakeholders (faculty, staff, prospective students, alumni, prospects, etc.)
- Participates in campus events involving alumni and families to engage those stakeholders in our services and programs.
- Serves on College/University committees as assigned.
Project Management/Administrative Duties
- Provides leadership for, coordination of, or assistance with various special programs and projects in line with strategic planning process (ie: supervising student staff, coordinating graduate assistants, orientation of new staff, etc.).
- Serves on various cross-functional teams to promote the vision and direction; contribute to the strategic planning in order to evolve center services and programs.
- Represents UR and the center in local and national professional associations and conferences in order to stay current with industry standards and changes, revise programs to reflect trends, and increase the center’s visibility among professionals in the field.
- Participates in university committees providing representation of the career center on community issues.
- Plays an active role in the collection of assessment data that serves as a driver for strategic decisions.
Other Duties as Assigned
- Master’s Degree required. Emphasis on counseling, student affairs, higher education, or related field preferred.
- 5-7 years of related experience in higher education, recruitment, or graduate/professional school admissions.
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at UR.
- Ability to collaborate cross-functionally in the office environment and to interface with employers, students, alumni, faculty, and university administrators.
- Ability to embrace and drive change and to organize and effectively manage multiple priorities, programs, and projects.
- Exceptional communication (written, oral, presentation). Demonstrated proficiency designing and delivering presentations.
- Strong experience leading teams and developing positive relationships, partnerships, and alliances.
- Experience advising students on career-related topics
- Outcomes assessment and evaluation strategies.
- Ability to assess and report student-learning outcomes.
- Project management experience.
