Description:

The Mellon College of Science is seeking a full-time Veterinarian to support Carnegie Mellon's animal facilities by working collaboratively with the research investigators, research staff, facility personnel, IACUC, and others to maintain a quality program. Responsible for maintaining the health and well-being of all animals approved for use through the IACUC. Participates in IACUC activities that include protocol review and post-approval monitoring and compliance. Clinical requirements include disease detection and surveillance, treatment and resolution; overseeing surgical and post-surgical care; advising and providing oversight on animal handling, restraint, use of analgesics and tranquilizers and methods of euthanasia in accordance with AVMA guidelines; advising on the occupational health safety program including monitoring for zoonotic diseases; and advising and monitoring biohazard control policies and procedures relevant to the animal care and use program.

Responsibilities:

  1. Support operations of the animal research facility to ensure compliance with current animal welfare laws, regulations, and policies, and Research and Development (R&D) programs using animal subjects.
  2. Provide guidance and technical support to facility's investigators in planning, executing, and directing R&D activities using animals. This includes the establishment and execution of disease surveillance programs in the animal research facility.
  3. Help develop and implement training programs to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies and facility standards.
  4. Initiate and/or review requests for equipment used in the animal research facility and plans for animal research facility construction and renovation.
  5. Serve on the IACUC and other committees as appropriate.
  6. Review animal care and use protocols and participate in post-approval monitoring activities.
  7. Perform mandatory veterinary consultations with investigators prior to the submission of their animal protocol to the IACUC.
  8. Review diagnostic reports and monitor reports for strain, facility, and program trends.
  9. Participate in mandated semi-annual IACUC inspections of animal facilities.
  10. Assist the University facilities in preparing for, receiving, and maintaining Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC), international accreditation site visits, and compliance visits by regulatory agencies.
  11. Create/review regulatory documents required for compliance with applicable regulations, guidelines, and policies. This includes AAALAC Program Descriptions, Public Health Service (PHS) Assurance documents, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Annual Reports and reports maintained by the IACUC.
  12. Serve as a source of guidance on animal research regulations, guidelines, and prevailing standards.

Qualifications:

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) required.

3-5 years of experience

Certification: American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM)
